Renting a Large House on HH

Any suggestions on where to rent a house to accomodate 14+ people on HH? Looking for ocean front for 4 families with children of all ages. Maybe someone can direct me to rental sites. Thanks!

Renting a Large House on HH

Start with vrbo.com most of the local rental agencies will then have a link that takes you to their own site. Google ';hilton head rentals'; and just go thru the list. Most of the major realtors do a great job. Have never had a problem.

Renting a Large House on HH

There are several on the island to use. The ones I use are Hilton Head Rentals %26amp; Golf ( www.hiltonheadvacation.com ) %26amp; The Vacation Company ( www.vacationcompany.com ). If you prefer to rent thru the owner, use VRBO.com or Cyberrentals.com. Good Luck!

Most large ocean front houses are located in North Forest Beach, Palmetto Dunes, or Singleton Beach.

These homes may be found on VRBO.com or Cyberrentals.com, I think however that the best homes of that size are only available from the commercial companies. I concur with a precious poster on the Vacation company, since they are beach oriented, but Hilton Head Tennis and Golf is not. As their name indicates they are more oriented to the local sports activities. You should also try Island Getaway.

Stan (hhiguy)

Hilton Head Rentals %26amp; Golf does offer packages with golf %26amp; tennis, but they are also very ocean oriented with their rentals. They have many houses %26amp; villas in Singleton Beach, Shorewood, Villamere, Seacrest, Forest Beach area %26amp; even Captains Walk. We Have used them several times %26amp; we don%26#39;t play golf or tennis. Our vacations are always beach oriented.

SkiCat

Sometimes you have to read the question. The original post talked about 4 couples with children. They need a large oceanfront home!

That means at least six bedrooms, possible seven. There are very few rental companies which have those in inventory. Vacation company has quite a few, as does island getaway.

You showed that Hilton Head Rentals and Golf has lots of villas. Great but not for this poster.

Stan (hhiguy)

tbelter,

Good luck with your home search. All of the above companies have houses with the amenities you are looking for. A quick search showed the Vacation Company had approx 24+ homes with 5+ bedrooms, HHR%26amp;G approx 41+, %26amp; Island Getaway really excels on these with 95+ (not seperating any by view). Hope you have a great time on the island.

We are a group of eight mature golfers who appreciate separate bedrooms (snoring, you know). We have had success renting large HHI homes on VRBO.com.

  • Hilton Head for kids?

I am looking for a destination for a family getaway. I am looking for a vacation for 5 families with kids ages from 3-10. Any information about what there is to do with the kids and where the best places to stay would be very much appreciated. We a looking to go in July

    Thanks

    Check out Daufuskie island....

    Hilton Head for kids?

We just got back today, and I would certainly say that Hilton Head is more than appropriate for children. All restaurants, even fancier seafood ones, accomodate children easily. Bike rentals are cheap and make for a fabulous experience (around $18 each for the week or bring your own). There are even bike rentals that come with children%26#39;s seats or tandem bikes for smaller children. You can also do dolphin cruises (you WILL see them) for as little as $12 an adult/$6 a child. Try the Gypsy boat out of wonderful Sea Pines area. There are tons of shops that are unique and delightful that welcome kids. You can also do deep sea fishing for much less than I%26#39;ve seen in other areas (around $50 dollars for 4-5 hour cruises). They offer kid specific cruises in the summer months where kids get to pull up crab pots, etc. The beach is one of the prettiest I%26#39;ve seen and can make for a full day easily! You can also rent kayaks, view the lighthouse and many beautiful marinas, which always have kids activiites or music playing. There are multiple free or low cost nature reserves around the island, and cheap, but impressive, mini-golf courses. I just asked our 2 kids what has been their favorite vacation to date and they put HIlton Head at the top of their list-above Disneyworld! I%26#39;d have to agree! We stayed in the Coligny circle area in a timeshare unit but if you could get in I%26#39;d recommend the Disney Hilton Head resort because it has oodles of daily free or low cost activites on its resort. Hope this helps!

In addition to the activities posted by travelinmonfor2 here are some other ideas.

    The Build-a-Bear store in Coligny.

The Sandbox-Our childrens museum on 12 Pope avenue

Gregg Russell at the Liberty Oak in HarborTown

Shannon Tanner - in Shelter Cove

A number of restaurants higher magicians who perform table magic or ballon tricks tableside.

    Stan (hhiguy)

    Responding to HHguy:

Forgot the wonderful magician! Thanks for the information!

We ate at the Kingfisher Seafood and Steak House in the Shelter Cove Harbour (next to Disney resort). They had a wonderful magician on the night we were there (Wednesday). Kids loved watching him dump sand out of a child%26#39;s shirt, light a wallet on fire, deface a dollar bill and then fix it before their eyes, etc. This restaurant also has a great early bird special for 15.00 dollars that includes an appetizer, choice of 6 entrees, dessert/wine, etc. You have to eat before 6 pm, which was easy to do with young kids! No coupon was needed for this meal either!

    New to Hilton Head

We are planning a short vacation (4-5 nights in August) in hilton head. We are older parents of a 12, 9 and 7 year old. We usually stay in Hyatts and Westins when travelling and am a bit confused about the Hilton head area. Is the Westin in a good area for walking around especially walking to some good restaurants. We want to stay right on the beach and do not need a condo as i do not plan to cook one meal. We enjoy the pool, the beach, renting bikes, good food, miniature golf, kayaking, and other kid activities.

Would the Westin be a good pick or is there something else out there similiar to a Westin in a better location.

any help you can give would be appreciated.

We heard that Hilton Head is beautiful and we cannot wait to visit!

    New to Hilton Head

The Westin is the finest hotel on the island. It has an oceanfront location in the Port Royal area of the island (see my Sticky marked plantations). Other than the two restaurants at the hotel, you will have to drive to others.

The Hilton Resort may be a better choice. It is located in Palmetto Dunes, and is also oceanfront. You can eat at the hotel in their restaurant ';Mostly Seafood';, or walk to the Marriott and eat at ';Conroys'; (you may even spot Pat himself, as he eats there whenever he%26#39;s on the island). There is a third restaurant ';Alexanders'; within walking distance.

On other days you can take the buggy to Shelter Cove where there are a number of additional restaurants.

I may be predjudiced but I think the Golf Courses and Tennis facilities at Palmetto Dunes are superior to those at Port Royal.

Finally you might consider the Marriott also, but I think the Hilton is a better choice, it certainly is more popular with those who use Travel Advisor.

If you just want the beach and walk to stores and restaurants, consider the Holiday Inn Oceanfront. It is very near Coligny Circle with it%26#39;s shops and restaurants within walking distance.

    Stan (hhiguy)

    New to Hilton Head

With kids I would stay in the South Forest Beach area. You can walk to shopping, dining, miniature golf, small water park, etc. Even if you don%26#39;t plan to cook a condo offers more room for everyone and is probably the same price as the hotels you are looking at. There are 2 very nice condo resorts in that area. Have fun.

thank you for all your input. Can you tell me what the differences between the Marriot and Hilton are. We like a nice pool, bar area or bar service at the pool, a lunch place at the pool, a breakfast restaurant in the hotel and a beachfront hotel. We would like to be able to walk to dinner at night and maybe shop or miniature golf with the kids. Do any of the hotels fit the bill??

I do not want a condo...we run a bed and breakfast 365 days a year, cook daily, and clean rooms. I want to sit back, have someone make my bed and serve me food. It is the only few days we get spoiled a years.

Thanks for your help in advance.

You will have a hard time walkiing to ';activities'; from either place. The traffic is heavy and I would not want to be on the street with 3 children. To be able to walk, you would have to stay at a condo or a motel in the South Forest Beach area (some condos have maid service I think - you could ask). The nicest ones on the island are the Seacrest (very expensive). I hope you know that there is not alot for children to do on Hilton Head other than one water park, miniature golf and some activities at Coligny Plaza and Shelter Cove has fireworks one night a week (or they have in the past). There is a safe bike riding path (plenty of bike rentals) and you could go to Harbor Town one night (although expect crowds). There are also some neat things to do if you are willing to leave the island such as going to some of the other islands and the preserves.

The Westin is a long way from South Forest Beach where most of the action is. Hilton Head is beautiful but just be prepared for the traffic !! If you are from rural Va. you will be in for a surprise!

Chunky doesn%26#39;t know Palmetto Dunes very well. There is a walkway bike path to tennis and golf and they are a short walk from either hotel. So traffic is not a problem. The beach is less crowded than Forest Beach even with the two major hotels on site. While there are those who are very enthused with Forest Beach, others want the privacy and amenities of a plantation. Sometimes posters seem to forget that.

As for the two hotels both have what you seem to require. The Marriott is more of a convention hotel, though both have meeting facilities The Hilton is more laid back, and most rooms are studio apartments. The Windjammer Lounge at the Hilton is a popular nitespot among visitors and locals.

They also have Childrens programs available for guests.

    Stan (hhiguy)

thanks again for the help. Our children do not need much entertainment, a pool, a beach, a night or two of miniature golf and some shopping is fine.

We are just not the condo type but appreciate all the feedback. At this point in my life, a resort fits my vacation needs.

Is the Hilton mostly families? We are not into loud abnoxious kids with parents who hang by the pool and ignore their children. We really just want ';nice';.....

The marriot sounds conventionish, but the hilton scares me with studios...doesn%26#39;t that mean lots of kids and noise?

I know I am being picky but we are pretty tired and just want some quality relaxing time at a really nice place with our kids.

Is the Hilton in a better location for walking or is the Marriot?

Just returned from Hilton Head last week, stayed in a condo in Palmetto Dunes and looked at both the Hilton and Marriott. I really liked the beach bar at the Marriott but the Hilton has a more tropical pool area. Palmetto Dunes does have a lot to offer in walking distance. Bike rentals, kayak rentals a few restaurants, etc.

i%26#39;m sorry to say that since I live in Hilton Head, I can%26#39;t give you input as to the type of guest at each venue.

Working in an occupation that requires my attending out of town meetings several times a year, I can tell you that the hotel ambience depends largely on the guests. Some groups will be loud and noisy, while others are more sedate.

I travel frequently to Northern Virginia, and generally stay in the same hotel. Some nights I can%26#39;t sleep because of the noise, and others the hotel seems almost empty. I have stayed there when wedding and family reunions are going on, and each group is different. I believe you will find that to be true here.

    Stan (hhiguy)

You say you don%26#39;t need a Villa but you mentioned your kids ages. Separate but close rooms much like home would make the experience much more enjoyable than connecting rooms at a hotel. We didn%26#39;t cook a meal but a kitchen is nice for snacks for the kids and saves a lot of money. Villamare Oceanfront Villas (Palmetto Dunes area) is one of the closest places to the beach. We stayed in an owner maintained unit, wonderfully decorated with family photos and a logbook. A large pool outside and inside, covered parking (tight though). As for walking to restaurants I wouldn%26#39;t advise that since there are so many trees to block a drivers vision from seeing you or you seeing them. You are minutes from everything and you don%26#39;t want to be there all the time (noisy). I like Palmetto Dunes area because much of it is behind a 24 hour security gate. Outside of the gate in a week stay we did see two acts of crime being attended to. I don%26#39;t know anyone that hasn%26#39;t frequented Hilton Head Island that hasn%26#39;t gone to the Sea Pines Plantation at least a couple of times during their stay. We enjoyed the Horse Back riding at Lawton Stables, gentle horses and basically a walking ride through the trees for reasonable rates for the whole family. Get all the coupon books and information you see along the way to your location. Ask the locals for the best places to eat, get there early, and don%26#39;t mind waiting for good seafood regardless of the building surroundings. We go every year, have to book early usually. Savannah, Georgia is minutes away, we ate a wonderful meal at Lady and Sons, booked at 11:00am for a 1:15pm time, reservations are a must.

To all those who have recommended Villa or Condo rental for retirednvirginia. Folks when they want to come (August) you can only rent condo%26#39;s by the week (Saturday to Saturday). They are coming for 4 or 5 days. They know what they want.

Help them acheive their dreams. Don%26#39;t tell them your dream vacation.

    HIlton Head vacation

My husband, 3 kids and I are going to be on the East Coast in August for some family parties. We%26#39;ve decided to get away from it all for a week in Hilton Head since my husband loves to golf. I%26#39;m looking for a resort for us. I don%26#39;t want to cook. My kids want great pools and a great beach. My husband wants great golf nearby. I%26#39;d like them all to be happy so I can read my book. Any suggestions?

    HIlton Head vacation

Your Best bet is Palmetto Dunes, which is the most ocean oriented resort. You can rent a house or a 3 bedroom villa on the ocean there.

You will be able to walk to two courses, and tennis. Many rentals have free tennis attached.

Another possibility is SeaPines Plantation. It%26#39;s the largest resort on the island, and has three golf courses, including Harbourtown which is where the Verizon Heritage is played. This year April 10-16. Again there are plenty of rental villas and houses available. However not many available oceanfront.

There are over 200 restaurants here, so you will never have to cook, if you don%26#39;t want to.

Check vrbo.com or cyberrentals.com for owner rentals at these resorts.

If you are coming after Aug 15th, you will get a better rate, since summer rental weeks are less in demand, though the weather is great.

    Stan (hhiguy)

    HIlton Head vacation

We stayed at Palmetto last yr, and will return. Good location, great tennis, nice beach and although i do not golf, it appeared to have nice course. There is also canoeing, and lots of bike trails. As mentioned in earlier post I also rent from vrbo.com to save money

I would defenetly reccomend The Grande Ocean. You get a free pass to sea pines so each time you want to go to a ';good'; golfing course You won%26#39;t have to pay an extra five dollars.

It%26#39;s also convienent for the kids. I have gone there for years and It%26#39;s been fun for the kids and everything. The beach is nice there unlike some of the others we%26#39;ve seen on the island. The pools are SPECTACULAR. They%26#39;ve got like six pools so it%26#39;s convienyent for everyone.

If you really want to have fun. get a flashlight and go out to the courtyard and go frog hunting. It%26#39;s always been fun for everyone but me, because I hate frogs

    Good Luck!!!

    Hi,

We have been to Hilton Head Island a few times and our favorite place is Sea Pines Plantation. It is gated and feels very secure and private. When you enter the plantation, you will be amazed at all the unspoiled beauty. There are streets lined with oak trees and beautiful gardens and lagoons. They have stables, tennis, swimming pools, golf, bike trails, playground and much more. We enjoyed walking around Harbour Town Marina. It has good places to eat, nice shops and live entertainment. They even have rocking chairs sitting around the marina for you to use to enjoy watching it all. There is also a playground for the kids. I think there are children%26#39;s activites during the summer. I am going to look into them for my daughter. My daughter also enjoyed the lighthouse and ice cream shopat Harbour Town. We can%26#39;t wait to go back and rent some bikes to ride around the beautiful plantation and to the beaches. There are also shuttle stops that pick you up and take you to different locations in the plantaion. The beach area is also very nice. It was too cold for us to enjoy that yesterday, but there was plenty of other things to do. Can%26#39;t wait to go back!

    basic info. hilton head.

Thinking of bringing large family get together to Hilton head. I';ve heard tons of info. from fabulous to horrible. So, if area experts could respond I would be thankful. Ages 2, 7,12,14 to 50%26#39;s. 2 week vacation begining of july 2008. We frequent Myrtle Beach and Florida. Never to HHI. I%26#39;ve gotten mixed messages. So could you compare beach, roughness, sand, experiance, activities, and restaurants. Especially for the children. I%26#39;m told few activities, rough water, not nice beaches and not well maintained beaches. Then I%26#39;ve recently had someone say it was wonderful. Most timeshares we%26#39;ve looked at aren%26#39;t on the beach. I%26#39;m not sure why. If someone knows of a few really nice ones that would be great too. I%26#39;ve been very lucky to receive very informative and accurate info. here before, so I thank you in advance.

    basic info. hilton head.

You will find our beach to be much nicer, cleaner and more accessable than either Myrtle Beach or the Florida Atlantic Coast Beaches. The reason is mainly there is less erosion due to hurricane activity. there is also an active renourishment program. The beaches were redone last year. the only beaches I have found on the east coast comparable are in the Panhandle area.

there is a large reef off shore which tends to lessen the wave action, so most days it%26#39;s quite calm. So the bad things you%26#39;ve heard about the beach is not true.

Hilton Head is a laid back resort, so some of the more honky donk things you find at a beach resort are missing. NO Carnivals, NO Boardwalk, NO Beachside stands that sell french fries, Funnel Cakes, etc, No fancy Theatrical Shows.

you can find shops that sell souvenirs, mini golf and other more typical beach items, but not as numerous or loud as in other resorts. the developers of our island wanted to create a world class resort without losing the environmental and historical atmosphere of the low country.

The only oceanfront timeshares are some of those run by the Marriott Corporation. You will find some information about those by searching further on this website. Like most Marriott properties these are topnotch.

Most people who come here with a large group usually rent houses. If you are looking for a house on the water, then you will find them at Palmetto Dunes, SeaPines or North Forest Beach. there are a few other places mid island that you will find ocean front houses. My recommendation is that you look to some of our commercial companies for rentals.

While VRBO or HomeAway are great rental sites for private rentals you may find that some of the offerings are not what you expect, and may be disappointing in reality. When you rent with a commercial company, you have someone who can rectify a problem.

    Stan (hhiguy)

    basic info. hilton head.

Thank you very much for clearing up some miss information. I have alot more to go on now.

We went to MB this year and found it to be over crowded and tacky-very much unlike HH. We rent a house (a great way to go for a family) in Palmetto Dunes (2nd row) close enough to hear the ocean but w/o the high price tag. I think the beaches are very well maintained (unlike MB which is littered w/ firework remnants and occasional trash) and are not crowded. Perhaps if you stayed in a resort, you may find the beaches to be more crowded but in Palmetto Dunes, they are not even close to being crowded. There are a bunch of great places to eat on any budget. A few of our favorites are Alexanders (always 1st night as it is in PD) Oliviers, Old Fort Pub. There are standard beach activites (putt-putt, etc) but there isn%26#39;t any huge amusement parks, so if thats what you need, you may be disappointed. My son has never been bored while in HH. If you have your own house, you more than likely will have your own pool, so that will give the kids something to do and renting bikes is always a fun idea. Its a great way to get to know your surroundings. Rent your bikes asap as they sell out early. There is a weekly fireworks display (not the best I%26#39;ve seen, but still fun) Take a blanket and some snacks and enjoy! We think HH is a great family vacation destination w/o the tacky flashing lights and crushing crowds, but some folks enjoy that kind of thing, but we go on vacation to get away from it. Have fun if you go!

We have stayed at the Island Club for the last 15 years and have always had a great time. We are usually there the 1st and 2nd weeks of August as we have two timehsare units there. I have never had a bad time while being there. We are a very beach oriented family so we spend most of our time there. The walk to the beach, if you are not oceanfront is just across the parking lot.

I%26#39;m not an expert by any means but have taken many beach vacations over my life, so here are some things from just my own experiences. Sorry so long-winded!

We just returned from HHI, staying in Shipyard but not right on the beach. (Port O Call in Shipyard--accommodations were fine, but beach too far away to suit us.) If we go back, we%26#39;ll definitely get someplace on the beach or just not go--but we are beach-lovers. Like you, we couldn%26#39;t find a timeshare exchange in HH ON the beach--we only needed a 1BR or studio. We%26#39;d love to know of some of those, too!

We did not have any children with us and so weren%26#39;t really looking, but other than riding bikes or playing tennis or playing in the pool or on the beach, we didn%26#39;t see much for kids (Not that that wouldn%26#39;t be enough to keep kids happy--depends on what the kids like and expect, I guess.) There was a putt-putt on William Hilton Pkwy, I think. As said, we weren%26#39;t on the beach--went to beach only one day because our beach access wasn%26#39;t that great. Almost all the beaches on HH are private.

HHI is very natural and lovely, but there isn%26#39;t as much ';stuff'; as in most Flordia beach areas. This may be an advantage or disadvantage depending on tastes and needs. There are some shops and restaurants, of course, but it%26#39;s very peaceful-looking in most areas that we saw. We thought the marshes were lovely. In the shopping center/movie areas parking can be a problem, also at some of the restaurants. The beach was wide and the sand was soft, but the Atlantic water in any place I%26#39;ve ever been including HH just isn%26#39;t nearly as pretty as that of the Gulf. Maybe it%26#39;s personal preference, but that%26#39;s mine. The Atlantic is usually a little rougher, too, in my experience. If you want to ride waves, maybe that%26#39;s good--but I like calm water. The beach (on that one day) was clean and a little crowded, but not bad for an Atlantic beach.

Maybe I%26#39;m just spoiled, but other than going to the Caribbean, IMO there are no beaches as pretty as those on the Gulf of Mexico in the Florida panhandle areas. Most of these areas are very built-up and congested, but there%26#39;s a reason: those lovely beaches and water--usually very clear and blue/green and mostly calm, very soft pure white sand. (Although as anywhere, there can occasionally be seaweed, etc. Most of the times we%26#39;ve been, the water has been absolutely beautiful.) Some areas might still have some hurricane damage, but I think most are back to normal now. We%26#39;ve been to Destin, Panama City Beach, and also Gulf Shores/Orange Beach in Alabama several times each place. Never been to Myrtle Beach, but from what I%26#39;ve heard and read, don%26#39;t want to. Have been to Clearwater farther down on the Gulf once but panhandle is much closer for us.

You might be able to find a beach house in the panhandle area that%26#39;s not as congested--we%26#39;ve never stayed at a beach house but would love to go with the whole family to one someday. For the past 10 years, we have mostly exchanged through our Hilton Grand Vacations timeshare (which goes through RCI) for our vacations, and we LOVE doing that! Get great vacations. There are a good many beachfront timeshare condos in the panhandle area and we always get beachfront, which means right on the beach there, as you probably already know.

Most of the areas of HH that we saw are just a totally different atmosphere from the Florida beach areas. Tennis %26amp; golf %26amp; bike trails and oaks with Spanish moss, and little ponds, marshes. You%26#39;d need to stay ON the beach to get to it easily IMO. Good luck finding a suitable timeshare there if you decide on HHI, and let the rest of us timesharers know!

  • Singleton Beach Vacation Rental

My first trip to Hilton Head Island was awesome. We stayed in a Vacation rental property in the Singleton Beach area. At first I was hesitant to rent such a large home for our family but it was great having everyone stay together. November is a nice time to visit HIlton Head if you don%26#39;t like crowds. I would like to return during the summer next time and experience the ';party atmosphere.'; We got a great package from Hilton Head Rentals and Golf. They had lots of properties for us to pick from and their golf coordinator was very knowledgable as to which courses we should play for our skill level. I was really surprised how affordable the golf was, I was expecting to pay huge green fees but that wasn%26#39;t the case. Can%26#39;t wait to return.

    Hilton Head Advice Needed Please

    Hello,

I need some advice please. I will be staying with my family in a house we are renting in Sea Pines Plantation. We have never been to HHI so we are really looking forward too it! 2 families are going with kids ages 11,8,8 girls and 4 boy

    Questions

1)Does Sea pines have a private beach that we can access too?

2)If not, what public beachs would you recommend?

3)We heard the bike trails are great. where are they? Do they run thru each plantation?

4)Is there anything that you would recommend as a must do attraction or event while visting HHI?

    Thank you in advance!

    Hilton Head Advice Needed Please

Sea Pines has a beach club which is used by the residents and visitors who are staying at the resort. It depends on where your accomadation is as to whether you can walk or will drive to the beach.

2 - no need to go to public beach. The nearest is forest beach.

3 - Bike trails are all over. You should be able to pick it up near your accomadation.

    4 - See Previous thread ';Hilton Head %26#39;Must Do%26#39;s%26#39;';

    Hilton Head Advice Needed Please

I would recommend the lighthouse tour in Harborplace and the fireworks cruise on the Island Queen on Tuesday evening.

The dolphins are in abundance and the fireworks are shot from a barge in the middle of the water!

Bike trails are EVERYWHERE! You cannot miss them. For t-shirt purchases we found Camp Hilton Head to be the best.

Hope you have a great time!

    Thanks fokes!

We can%26#39;t wait for some fun in the sun.

The must do list was a great reference as well!

    Thanks again

    denver173

You will not be allowed to bike into any of the plantations (private communities), other that sea pines (where you are staying), Plenty of bike paths on the public areas of the Island. Plenty of things to do outside of sea pines, so don%26#39;t limit yourself to the sea pines area only.

    Denver173:

My family and I just returned from Hilton Head and Savannah. We had a horrible experience with our Ocean One Condo from Sunset Retals in Forest Beach. Please, whatever you do, do not use Sunset Rentals for anything. You will be so disappointed.

Sea Pines is a gorgeous area of Hilton Head. It depends where you are staying you will most likely have access to a private beach. There are loads of bike trails that run thru town which is so cute - make sure you get over to Pametto Dunes. Make sure you bring your golf clubs as the golf courses are to die for.

    Have a wonderful trip,

    Crazy4SF

Many people mentioned riding bikes in Sea Pines which is a nice place to ride. However, you do have to pay to get in (even a bike) and a couple years ago, you could not ride your bike in - only take it in on a car and then park and ride. Has this changed?

For the kids, you should go to Harbor Town, Coligny and Shelter Cove in the evening for the free outdoor shows.

Go to the top of the Lighthouse and read all the history of the island.

Go to the stables in Sea Pines.

You need a pass to get into Sea Pines in a car or on a bike.

Check Cyberrentals or VRBO for private rentals. Commercial rentals try the Vacation Company or Island Getaway. They have websites. You can find rentals by checking these.

Help! First time to Hilton Head.

My husband and I are planning a trip to Hilton Head in April. We have a 9 month daughter, so we need something kid friendly, but not necessarily geared towards kids. We would like to stay somewhere newer, walking distance to the beach. We will have a car, but would like to be able to walk to restaurants and shopping, too. I have looked on line and thought the Marriott by Coligny Plaza may be nice, or maybe the South Beach Marina Inn. Thanks for your help!

Help! First time to Hilton Head.

The Marriott is at Palmetto Dunes not Coligny. There is a Marriott Timeshare ';Grande Ocean'; about 3/4 of a mile from Coligney on South Forest Beach Drive.

See if you can get a place at the SeaCrest resort. It%26#39;s oceanfront and across the street from Coligney. Less upscale but also in the area is ';The Breakers';.

Look up on sites like VRBO, or Cyberrentals for private rentals, or check with some of the commercial rental companies. Vascation Company has a good selection for both places, as has Beach Properties.

    Stan (hhiguy)

PS Stay away the week of April 11th unless you love golf. The big PGA tournament is in town, and we are very crowded.

Help! First time to Hilton Head.

Have been going to Hilton Head since mid 70%26#39;s. My parents live there now. Hands down the bast thing you can do is stay away from the Coligny area. It is known as a tourist trap. If you want a beautiful place to stay and be right on the beach...stay at the Island Club of Hilton Head on Folly Field Road. Has pools, kids pool, tennis courts, oceanfront rooms, walk to the Westin Resort in Port Royal, centrally located, guarded entry and golf galore nearby. It is also on the bike trail so you can get out and go. They have bike rentals as well onsite.

Good luck on your stay. This is just my opinion but if you want to see the true Hilton Head...stay away from the Coligny area.

hilton head in august with kids

my wife and i are travelling to hilton head in august with our 3 and 5 year olds. we are looking for a place to stay that will be fun for the kids, ie. kids pools, activities, etc. looking at the marriott grande ocean, but very expensive for two bedroom unit. does anyone know of villa rentals that also have good kids activities, as this might be less expensive option. also is disney resort a good bet. thank you. m.l

hilton head in august with kids

We have a 2 bedroom villa in Palmeto Dunes. It is completely equipped with everything from DVD player to outdoor grill to washer/dryer. No planned activities for kids but close to beach with pool and tennis in villa complex. Bikes, canoes, kyaking easily available. Plenty of room for a family of 4. Disney Resort uses the same beach as our villa but is not as close.

hilton head in august with kids

Hilton Head in August can be HOT! There%26#39;s usually a good breeze from the ocean, but children that age can get badly sun burned quickly. Be sure to use plenty of sunblock.

Disney is the best for kid activities by far. Great pool area, snack bar and pier right at the resort. They have a shuttle to take you to and from the beach. Disney is actually on a small Island at shelter Cove harbor. Lots of children programs at Disney. By the way--At the Disney beach house, there is a pool and snack bar right at the beach for Disney guest only. If you want to drive or bike (on bike paths) to the beach house, it is only one mile. Hope this helps---We do not work for Disney--we are resisdents on the Island. The villa rentals have no activities on property for kids--it would be up to you to find activities to do.

August is a great time to go south! If you go late in the month, the local schools are back in session and the resorts are less crowded. Two summers ago, we stayed at the Marriott Beach and Golf Resort with our 3 kids, then 3, 5, and 9. They had a great time! At those ages, you could be at a Holiday Inn a mile from home, but if there%26#39;s a pool and food, they%26#39;re happy! We liked the Marriott, but we were able to stay using reward points, otherwise it is very expensive, and the food at the resort is also pricey. But there are plenty of great restaurants of all types up and down the island. BE SURE to take your kids into Harbortown to see Shannon Tanner%26#39;s show! We loved it - silly kid%26#39;s songs and audience participation - it%26#39;s great. He also runs a show on a dophin watch ship out of the harbor, I think once a week. Have fun!

Sea Pines...we stayed there in August 03....It has everything imaginable for a family to do there. The prices of a villa are reasonable, although it may not be directly on the beach, they are very nice.

I am also going in August, but with 2 teens 14 and 15. They do like to golf. I am wondering about the rates during August?

  • Want a condo rental - HELP!!!

We are planning a get away in mid November to Hilton Head - want to rent a condo - have never done this before - where to I start - there are so many on the internet - but having never been there - how does one decide - so I am looking to you - Help - give me some websites or recommendations - PLEASE!!! I am grateful!

Want a condo rental - HELP!!!

for a start look at the STICKY ';Plantations'; on the top of the forum. It describes each of our resorts in some detail. You can then decide which resort most appeals to you.

You can then contact either a local rental company or look at the rental by owner internet sites.

For a first time renter, most times you are better off using a local rental company. Some of them rate their units by quality, while with the owner sites it%26#39;s Caveat Emptor.

The rental companies may cost a little more, but the quality of service may be worth the price. Some you can check are www.vacationcompany.com, www.islandgetaway.com, or www.resortquest.com

If you want to use an online owner internet site, then the two largest are www.homeaway.com or www.vrbo.com. homeaway uses several additional URL%26#39;s, but the listings are all the same.

The problem as i see it is the hyperbole of some of these listings. some of these units are not as well kept as those handled by the rental companies. So you need to investigate and have a conversation with the owner. Also ask for recent photographs.

Want a condo rental - HELP!!!

Do NOT rent at SeaScape Villas. We are here right now on vacation and the place is old and very dirty-- including roaches. Rented with Hilton Head Rentals and Golf. I will never come back to this place

Mid of November isn%26#39;t too busy on HHI. So I would recommend to

    1. read the sticky ';Plantations'; and any other information available

    2. roughly decide where you want to go (or rather NOT)

    3. look up which rental companies have the best inventory in that area, but make no reservations

    5. when on HHI go to some of these companies and ask what%26#39;s available (should be plenty)

    6. get keys and a map (or someone to accompany you) and check the units yourself.

We always do it this way. Many rentals on HHI are older and/or rather shady (which is nice in the summer but probably not in November), so you may want to check that out. Don%26#39;t trust what somebody tells you (beautiful and clean *yeah*) or what you see on a photo.

I personally love Sea Pines. Aside from its great beach it has two harbors and an interesting forest with boardwalks and plenty of wildlife information, just to name a few.

Hope you%26#39;ll have a good time. The island is beautiful.

oops, deleted #4 and forget to adjust the rest ...

Btw - we often rented through Island Getaway (www.islandgetaway.com). Never happened that we told them what we were looking for and they came up with something completely different. They were always very knowledgeable. Haven%26#39;t been there since several years, tho, so I don%26#39;t know the quality of the staff today.

If you rent with VRBO ask the owner if they have anyone locally servicing the home or condo. We rented a home through VRBO and the owner had a man check up on us all week to see if there were any problems. it was wonderful! When the pool wasn%26#39;t working he came over and so on...

We just got back from HHI %26amp; stayed at Seascape. The condo was nice %26amp; clean with no problems (other than the rain!). It is rented through Hilton Head Rentals %26amp; Golf as well. We will stay there again. I have had bad ones in Forest Beach %26amp; in Palmetto Dunes. If you get a bad one, make sure to let the rental company know asap. We have had them move us in the past because the condo was unacceptable. They also need to now so they can hopefully get the bad ones cleaned up.

I too rented from Hilton Head Rentals and Golf and got an excellent vacation home. The staff was very helpful with golf and restaurant recommendations. If you have problems with any home/condo rental you should always contact the management company. I%26#39;m sure they would help with any problems. Anyway, on my next visit I will use Hilton Head Rentals and Golf, Tom and Nancy are very accommodating.

Thanks for the helpful hints on reputable rental companies. We will look into the better rental companies mentioned and use them for our next visit. We have had a great time on the island this week once we killed the bugs in our condo and the moods perked up. We love this island and would love to own a property here.

Fam Reunion 6/08: Where to stay?

Calling all Hilton Head experienced travellers! My parents have chosen this island as the spot for their 50th Anniv family reunion in June, 2008. There will be 8 adults and 8 kids ages 5-20 (5 of the kids are teens). We want to stay on the beach ane we have not been here in 25 years. Any guidance will be greatly appreceiated!

Fam Reunion 6/08: Where to stay?

You will probably want to rent a house. Oceanfront Houses are available in Forest Beach, Palmetto dunes, SeaPines, and Singleton Beach. Some of these are quite large 7 or 8 bedrooms. Check some of the commercial sites.

www.Vacationcompany.com, www.islandgetaways.com, www.beachproperties.com for some ideas and rates.

    Stan (hhiguy)

Fam Reunion 6/08: Where to stay?

We just got back from Sea Pines and it would be a GREAT place for a family reunion. There are beautiful bike paths throughout the very large resort that will take you to shops, restaurants, the beach, etc. They have fun live entertainment nightly (A favorite was Gregg Russell, a ';kid%26#39;s entertainer'; who is entertaining for all ages). We did not stay on the beach but in the Racquet Club Villas with a golf course view. It was beautiful and accessible to everything. We loved riding our bikes to the beach. A couple years ago, my family (17 of us, 9 kids, 8 adults) rented a large beach house that we all stayed at. I think in the future we%26#39;ll rent villas or houses next to each other. Or perhaps a very large house! We are a very close family but a week of so many people was a little crazy (especially with little kids). Just a thought.

    Good luck!

We did the same thing in April and stayed on Dune lane in NFB area. We were 1 house away from the beach - very close. There were a total of 12 of us. We only had 2 teens 18 %26amp; 16, and 2 little ones 7 %26amp;5. The teens love that location because you can ride bikes all over - to Coligny and to the bike trails. I wouldn%26#39;t let the oldest drive- too crazy with all the traffic circles. I highly recommend it. the street was very quiet- no traffic to worry about.

Make sure you have a family portrait taken! And do yourself a favor and have some meals catered so you don%26#39;t have to try and get reservations at a restaurant. The woman who owns Skillets made us lasagna- we ate for 2 days and it was awesome. $60 for a huge pan that fed us all. The kids loved not having to be pulled of the beach and get dressed to go out. So did the adults!!

Hi Vacas4us: I wholeheartedly agree with the poster who suggested a house. We rented a house in March for a week on Osprey in North Forest Beach (the streets are alphabetic so Dune was before us) and LOVED it. We too could see the ocean from our front door. There were 10 of us, 2 teenagers, a 10 yr old and an 18 month old. There were four bedrooms and the master suite was like a mini apartment in a separate wing. We gave that one to our friend%26#39;s parents. The house had a pool, bar area and chimnea in the huge decked backyard. We really enjoyed BBQ%26#39;ing and relaxing back there. 4 free bikes were included in the rental and the bike paths are great way to get away from the rest of your group. We bought cheap flashlights for everyone before we left (Dollarama) and we took the teens on a nice night beach walk. They had a blast walking together with the flashlights and us slow pokes walked behind but did not have to worry about them up ahead. Another site to try is www.VRBO (vacation rental by owner) ask for lots of pics and references. You will have a real nice time. Just remember to get a house with enough bathrooms!

    Have fun.

    D in Muskoka.

Congrats and my parents 50th is comining up soon too!.

To the two people that rented houses in NFB. Can you tell me which website you used and address? I am looking for a house for next June. Someone stole my week of the house we rented last year. Thanks!

Sorry for the delay in responding. We actually rented found the house on VRBO but it was managed by a company that has now joined up with Eulalie Salley (sp?) Anyway, VRBO is a good site. There are loads of rental companies and Stan HHGuy recommends a few. We loved our house. Mind you, it had some problems but it didn%26#39;t affect our mood for too long. We stayed on Osprey which ended up being only a five minute bike ride from Coligny Plaza. You really have to do your homework and I would start now.

    D in Muskoka

Hi sorry too for the delay- packing up our first for college!!!!

We rented a house through VRBO also. It was on Dune Lane and it was just lovely. However- we talked to the owner several times to get a feel for everything. Also- my brother lives there and he was able to make a few inspections for us. I will tell you this...This house was not our first choice but when my brother went into the first house we liked(which was right on the ocean) he notiiced a very moldy smell and that lead him to believe htere would be issues. That was a HUGE help! The house we rented was absolutely immaculate and new! We loved it. Just beware and talk to the owners. Happy to answer more specifics- just contact me !

VACAS4US -We will be in HH this coming Saturday for 5 days... we are staying in a home directly on the beach in NFB. It is 7 bedrooms.. will let you know how it works out.. We are a family of 12 going.. Our first trip to HH--we found the home thru VRBO and then also googled it and found it thru the Vacation Co. Allot of these homes are for sale also so when you google them you can pull up more info on them..

We are also going to Hilton Head this June for my mom%26#39;s 70th and have been looking a VRBO to rent a home big enough for 16 of us. Please let me know about your rental, I think N. Forest is the best area for us.

Check out VRBO - it all depends on bedroom configurations- we had 12 people and 6 bedrooms but the house could have easily slept 16 in the bedrooms depending on who they were. You really need to look and do reasearch.

    October - 1st time visitors

My husband and I are coming to HHI 10/5 - 10/7 for a weekend visit and staying at the Hilton Oceanfront (great deal on Hotwire!). I am sure there are plenty of posts on this already but can I get some suggestions for first time visitors? Leaving 2 year old son for the weekend so looking forward to some grown up time and relaxation!

Any suggestions for things to do, places to see, restaurants, etc. for first timers? How are the water temps that time of year? What about hotel pools - still open?

    Thanks so much!

    October - 1st time visitors

It is beautiful in October. The ocean is still warm and the crowds are gone. I highly recommend Michael Anthony%26#39;s Cucina for fantastic Italian in a very nice elegant adult atmosphere- no spaghetti and meatballs here!. Check out their website. Also love the atmosphere at Santa Fe- upscale Tex Mex with an out door firepit on an upper level deck! Live music plays too. The Boathouse has beautiful views of the water and from what I hear Old Fort Pub is one of the best on the island but also pricey. I%26#39;m envious- have a great time!

    October - 1st time visitors

Not sure about water temps or hotel pools... but there are some things going on that weekend while you%26#39;re there, a Chili Cook off for one at the Honey Horn Plantation ;-) I loooove chili, so I can%26#39;t not mention something as exciting as that! Also, if you%26#39;re looking for something artsy to do ';The Full Monty'; musical will be performed at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina...

Otherwise, really, we kind of just bum around the island when we%26#39;re there... we always have a great meal at Catch 22! Really good food! We bike, kayak, just hang out at the ocean reading or walking... I enjoy hitting the shops around, husband does not, lol.. we just kidn of lay low and live in the moment there, unlike at home...

  • Going to MB next Wednesday the 12th????

My mother, aunt and cousin are headed off to MB for the first time Wednesday the 12th for a long weekend. I haven%26#39;t been to any beach for 6 years so we%26#39;re super excited. Although, checking the forecast it shows rain and thunderstorms.... bummer! I%26#39;m so disappointed. :(

How likely is it that it will rain the entire time and ruin our trip?

Since we havent been to MB we%26#39;re not sure what to expect.

Also this possibility of tropical storm on the Atlantic has me worried... we REALLY need this trip!!!!!!

    Please help!

Going to MB next Wednesday the 12th????

From what I%26#39;ve been hearing it sounds like the current storm should be in and out of area by the time you get there. Supposed to hit Saturday or Sunday.

Read a post on another board that it%26#39;s turning east as it heads north. Might brush coast with some rain and heavy surf. It is Mother Nature. Won%26#39;t know for sure until it happens.

I wouldn%26#39;t worry about extended forcast into next week. Seldom is 100% correct. Even if it does rain it%26#39;s not like up here. Might rain for an hour and the next hour be bright sunshine. Most storms are scattered. Might be raining in MB and clear in NMB. Or vice versa. Been making beach trips for 40+ years. Have never had one ruined by weather.

Going to MB next Wednesday the 12th????

    Yes...

try not to worry.. we have been going for at least 15 years.. and

only ran into one storm..and we left the condo..but stayed in the area..

If you look carefully and historically, it calls for ';scattered'; showers almost always on the coast. Frankly, I%26#39;ve only had rain once and it was in October. I wouldn%26#39;t fret too much.

    Hilton Head Penthouse Rentals?

We are going to Hilton Head Island in September and want a luxury condo or villa rental. We like a newer complex, oceanfront. Can you give us any suggestions? Best real estate agents to rent from?

    Hilton Head Penthouse Rentals?

watch out for the word Penthouse! Our local agents tend to use the word to describe a villa on the fifth floor of a condo. It usually isn%26#39;t the penthouse.

For instance at Captains Walk there are only six real Penthouses available. the entrances are on the fourth floor and they are duplexes. they each have a large deck instead of a balcony and depending on the interior work are either four or five bedrooms. I only know of two that are available for rental. One is handled by Island getaway, I don%26#39;t know who handles the other.

In Palmetto dunes look for Villa Mare, Captains Walk, Barrington Arms, Hamptons, and Windsors.

some of these date back to the early eighties, but are well maintained and brought up to date.

The Newest Oceanfront complex is located in South Forest Beach and is the SeaCrest Resort. Some of the units were built in 1997. Others in 1999, and finally the rest were finished in early 2000.

There is only one penthouse in the SeaCrest. It is owned by the developer, and as far as I know is not available for rent.

  • Condos at north end of Ocean Blvd?

Does anyone know the name of the condo complex at the northern most point of Ocean Blvd in Cherry Grove? Has anyone stayed there? Would like to give them a try.....

Condos at north end of Ocean Blvd?

Ocean Blvd. ends at Inlet Point Villas. That%26#39;s probably what you are talking about. Seems like there are about 10 low rise buildings (about 3 stories each). 2 or 3 face the ocean, the rest wrap around the inlet (inlet views). It%26#39;s a very unique location as the beaches, ocean, and inlet all converge in this area (very cool!). When it%26#39;s low tide there are lots of wade pools and the beach goes out a couple hundred hards. When it%26#39;s high tide, ocean is against the rocks and there is no beach. Units are older, so depends which unit you get as to quality. It%26#39;s very quiet in this location and there is no shopping, restaurants w/in walking distance (in case that%26#39;s important to you). Elliott Realty has about 8 units for rent in this complex, so look close at the pictures for views and furnishings if you book through them.

Condos at north end of Ocean Blvd?

My advice would be to stay at Seaside. Cherry Grove area is overrun with teenagers and party scene. If you want a quiet vacation avoid the north area.

';overrun w/ teenagers and a party scene';? Are we talking about the same Cherry Grove????????????????? Way off on that one.

Go drive by any night of the week and you will see teenagers running everywhere. Just returned and I know I%26#39;m not way off on this one. Ocean Blvd. is overrun with kids on the north end !

You full of it! I can take a video now if you%26#39;d like....I%26#39;m in the OD section but know for a fact the any section in NMB is fairly calm and docile with great family atmospheres.

First I%26#39;ve ever heard of too many teens on Ocean Blvd in Cherry Grove. Might see some walking around. No big deal. It is a family type area. You can%26#39;t keep them locked up. Can%26#39;t leave them home when they turn 13. I%26#39;ve never had any problem in Cherry Grove.

Now that I think about it, we have had birthday parties 3 times in Cherry Grove....my son%26#39;s 2 year, daughter%26#39;s 4 and 5 year. So technically, I guess, it%26#39;s a party scene. We even had balloons!

We have stayed at inlet point villas for the past 5 summers. We love it there. There are actually 16 units. There are set up weird but units 13, 14 15, 1, 2 ,3 are basically ocean front the rest have inlet , marsh or canal views. My kids are 5 and 12. If you get one of the above mentioned unit you can sit on your balcony and watch your kids on the beach. There is a beach left at high tide also. At low tide you can swim over to Waites Island and explore. This year there was a huge sand bar that the kids liked playing on. There is more birds and wildlife if thats what your in to. Yes ,it is quiet no riff raff. The complex has a pool, basketball and tennis courts. There is no evalvators so 3rd floor is a lot of carrying. We try for second floor. We are not much for eating out all the time so we fix most of our meals there. There is pizza delivery and a few places up ocean blvd. 17 is not that far. Little River is not far. If you like the crazyness head for Myrtle Beach not North Myrtle.

We are leaving for NMB next week. I haven%26#39;t been there for years, but was in hopes that it was still quiet and easy going atmosphere. Now that the kids are back in school, I am sure it should be anyway. So many people say we won%26#39;t reconize NMB now. That kind of scared us in going back but those of you who live there or has assured us that it is still the family quiet beach we remember and love. Thanks for the report. It helps.

The far south end of NMB has changed the most. NMB is still very quiet and famly atmosphere. You shouldn%26#39;t be disappointed.

Windy Hill has really built up into a large wall of highrise condos.

Atlantic is still undeveloped. I know it%26#39;s not really part of NMB but thought I%26#39;d throw it in there.

Cresent has been building up. Still some houses stuck here and there between the highrises. Some smaller condo buildings.

About the same for Ocean Drive. Couple of new large places there. MarVista and Wyndham Ocean Blvd are huge. Main Street is pretty much unchanged.

Cherry Grove hasn%26#39;t changed a lot. Still a lot of houses scattered in between the condos. Some large buildings but most are still in the five to six story range. Newest addition there would be Prince Resort built in front of Cherry Grove Pier. Cherry Grove Manor is gone. Being replaces by highrise. As of July site prep work was just beginning. New highrise on second row at north end of Tighlman section.

Sea Mountain Highway hasn%26#39;t changed any.

Rt 17 has changed a little. Large shopping center a little north of Main Street. Wal Mart and Home Depot/Lowes. Both or just one. Can%26#39;t visualize it now.

The Grand Prix Go Karts and amusment park are gone. Taken out last year. New shopping center going in on that property. Everything else about the same.

If you ate at Outrigger, it%26#39;s been closed for several years now.

Hilton head in January with kids

We are going to hilton head in january with our two kids 6 and 9. I have read all of the prior post on things to do but are the same things available year round? I know it is cool so I don%26#39;t think swimming on the beach is an option. Any good tips?

    Thank you!

Hilton head in January with kids

Much of the island is available during January. The coastal Discovery Museum is open and running a full calendar. the Sandbox is open. you can even play mini golf.

finally Gregg Russell is running a limited schedule during the winter.

    Is Charleston Dog friendly?

I am goign to be visiting Charleston the first weekend in October. Is the touristy area dog friendly? I would really like to be able to bring my two cavalier king charles spaniels, but I won%26#39;t if the gernal area isn%26#39;t to open to it.

    Thanks

    Is Charleston Dog friendly?

I dont think dogs in downtown tourist areas is a good idea. Some people are afraid of dogs and some just dont care for them. People love their pets but should also think of others who are also there to enjoy themselves. I would never bring our pet on vacation. Taking them out of their common invironment is stressful on them.

    Is Charleston Dog friendly?

Charleston Magazine did a big spread last year on places to go with your four legged friends. It listed many restaurants which allow pets. I googled ';dog friendly charleston'; . While most sites listed accommodations, there were a few websites with listings of restaurants.

Hopefully some of the ';on the street'; locals will chime in. I%26#39;ve always had the feeling that Charleston loves her four legged friends.

BTW, the state dog of SC is the Boykin Spaniel.

Many of the hotels welcome dogs and we have some dog parks around town but I do not know of any of the galleries, museums or plantations that accommodate dogs. The beaches allow dogs on leashes and most have dog-litter bags available. The only dogs downtown are usually residents. There is a pretty strict leash law for obvious reasons.

There are some doggie daycares and some doggie spas in the area. Bring your current vaccination and health record.

Married without Children in Myrtle Beach

My husaband and I are going to Myrtle Beach from 9/15 - 9/22. We will be staying in North Myrtle Beach and we are renting a car. What area attactions do you recommend? What about the night club scene? We are looking for adult only fun - thank you for any recommendations =)

Married without Children in Myrtle Beach

Where exactly in NMB? Not unusual for people to confuse north end of Myrtle Beach with the City of North Myrtle Beach.

Other than a few small beach bars there isn%26#39;t much night life in North Myrtle Beach.

Molly Darcy%26#39;s in Cresent Beach and Harold%26#39;s On The Ocean at Cherry Grove are oceanfront bars.

Couple other small bars along Ocean Blvd. Harold%26#39;s Beach Club on Main Street Ocean Drive. Not so much a ';party'; scene as a fun get together place for shaggers. (dancing to beach music).

There is a club at Ocean Drive Beach Resort called Spanish Gallion at end of Main Street.. It%26#39;s more of a late teen, young adult club. Hart has mentioned a bar in Little River called

    Dynamites at Dock Holidays.

The larger adult clubs are down around Broadway At The Beach entertainment/shopping complex. Also a Margaritaville there. Expect a long wait to enter if you try there.

Barefoot Landing shopping complex has House Of Blues and Alabama Theater.

Callahans in Calabash is a few miles north of NMB. Just across NC border. Nice little shopping and dining area.

  • Carnival Motor Inn?

I recently booked an oceanfront eff. at the Carnival Motor Inn for Jul. 9-16. Anyone had any experience with this motel? After browsing Carnival%26#39;s website, the beach area, and motel yard look good. I was assured by the staff that the appliances in the room I reserved had all been replaced for this season, the photos on the motel website also showed nice, new appliances. We usually stay at the Gazebo Inn. I like the quieter atmosphere the mom and pop owned motels usually offer, but for the price I had to try Carnival, very inexpensive in July. I have not been able to find any info on Tripadvisor on the Carnival Motor Inn, hopefully the forums will turn up some positive results. Thanks

    Carnival Motor Inn?

The Carnival Inn could be considered a ';mom and pop'; ...its still a quaint property...its not as huge as the mega resorts, and may not have all the bells and whistles...but sometimes just the coziness of that ';really getting to know your guests'; that some of the remaining ';mom and pops'; are known for around here can help make up that difference. I%26#39;m thinking (and I may be wrong on this one) that the Carnival and the Gazebo are owned by the same family, or maybe at one time they were...but I do beleive there is a connection there somewhere.

Hopefully you will have some input of people that have actually stayed there. As for the area they are in, if you are familiar with the Gazebo area, they arent but a few blocks from there.

    :)

    Carnival Motor Inn?

Thanks for the reply MBConcierge. The Gazebo Inn is on the southern end of MB, which I enjoy. I have never stayed on the northern end where Carnival is located, but hopefully it will be less crowded than the central portion, which I try to steer clear of if at all possible, except for a day spent gift shopping at the gay dolphin, a t-shirt or two, and a burger from Peaches for nostalgic reasons even though its not that tasty. I just like sitting in the booth and taking in the atmosphere. I will be taking some pictures of the pavilion this trip to remember it by. Lots of memories from vacations with my parents when I was younger.

Thats right, the Carnival is about 25th Ave N (I think...)Thats a nice area, close enough to walk down to Peaches if you so desire. We go down there at least once a year to enjoy the sights and to get a burger basket. Nothing like a real burger on a old diner grill! Yum!

You wont be far from one of my new fav places (since last fall) called Flying Fish Grille. They are just off Ocean Blvd on 26th Ave N. Great outdoor deck, usually live music on the weekends, and wonderful fish tacos!

As for the Pavilion...there was a piece in yesterdays paper about a website that the local Chamber and Burroughs and Chapin (the company that owns the Pavilion) develping a website that will let folks post there thoughts and memories about the place. I want to say it was www.pavilion.memories.com or something close to that.

    :)

HEY I was just wondering about your experience w/ the Carnival Motor Inn. We have booked it for the first week in August. just wondering how your trip was and if there is anything we should know about the place before we go down there? thanks

I had no complaints about the Carnival. The efficiencies had all new appliances, cabinetry, and carpet last July. The rooms seemed larger than usual and the cleaning staff and front desk were friendly. The owners stay in the hotel. It is a small hotel with just a pool, and not a resort by no means, the parking spaces were small, but I do not think that parking will be a problem in August versus when I went in July. The hotel has two larger resorts on both sides of it, the Palms on the right and Best Western Carolinian on the left, so it felt a little closed in, and the sunrise was blocked mostly by the Carolinian building in the mornings. I was very pleased with the Carnival for the price, and would not hesitate to stay again if my usual motel was full, and I still recommend it on the forums for people on a budget looking for a clean, affordable oceanfront motel, within easy walking distance to food and entertainment, such as Bummz beach bar and River City Cafe, which may be appealling to some. Save some money for food and attractions at the beach versus spending it on a room is my main goal, and you can spend much, much more and get a terrible room, as I have noticed from some of the reviews of high priced hotels. I hope you enjoy the Carnival as much as I did, for the price you can%26#39;t go wrong in my opinion.

We just got back from our stay at Myrtle Beach Aug 7,8-07. We stayed at Carnival Motor Inn. We found the Inn very basic. It was a mom and pop kind of place. Location is good, I watched a nice sun rise from the pool area. We had a ocean front room that opened out to the pool. It was was easy to park, go to the ocean, sit by the pool or enjoy sitting in the grassy area. We would have prefered a fancier place but the owners where very nice and we had no problems with our stay. For the price I guess it was pretty good.

What is the cost to stay there?

Ocean front was $50 including tax.

  • Trying to remember name of resort & comparing 3

    Hi all!

We were in MB the summer of 2006 and we drove past a pretty new resort property (mix of hotel rooms and condos) that was just south of the Forest DUnes property. It has a big drive way out front, and the main entrance is actually on the second floor. Can%26#39;t remember the name of the property, and we%26#39;d like to look into it for summer 08.

Also, in 2006, we stayed at the Sea Island, now the Island Vista, and we throughly enjoyed our stay, however, theie rates have gone up considerably, so we%26#39;re now considering other options. How would the the new tower at the Caribbean compare to the Island Vista? What about the new Duned Village Resort? ANy input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, in advance, for any help you can give with both of these questions!

Trying to remember name of resort %26amp; comparing 3

Southwind is the name your looking for.

Trying to remember name of resort %26amp; comparing 3

Thanks, Tonymik! That%26#39;s it! You%26#39;re an expert--would value any of your thoughts on comparing Island Vista, Southwind, new tower at Caribbean, and DUnes Resorts. We like newer, but looking for more around $200/for 1 BR unit compared to $300/night that Island Vista wants for next summer.

    Thanks, again!

Based on location, ease of parking, crowding or lack of crowds and balconies(size and view)I would choose Southwind if the prices are comparable.

If price is a consideration,Forest Dunes is a good bang for the buck with great views from the 8th floor on up.Im very familiar with Forest Dunes so if you pm me I can give you better advice.

    Dinner Recommendations

My family will be going to Charleston for the day tomorrow and we are in need of some dinner recommendations. We would like something relatively nice (around $20-30 per entree), and fun. Any help?

    Dinner Recommendations

If you like seafood, try Hank%26#39;s Seafood on Hayne Street, just north of the market. The food is excellent - not cheap, but well within the budget you describe. The atmosphere is relaxed and bistro-like, so it is a good place after a day of touring. Make a reservation, or be prepared to wait. They start serving a five o%26#39;clock.

    Dinner Recommendations

Queen Annes Revenge on Daniels Island (right there in Charleston just about)...its great food...and they have actual pirate artifacts!

    Magnolias is AWESOME!

We are going back in October. Hyman%26#39;s has been recommended for Seafood and Magnolia%26#39;s recommended as well. I%26#39;ll be watching for other places that are suggested as this will be helpful to us as well.

For casual sandwiches near College of Charleston and the Visitor%26#39;s Center, we were pleased with Groucho%26#39;s.

    Charleston Early November

We would appreciate some help in filling our plans while in Charleston between Nov 4 and Nov 7. Only a short visit but would like to take in a good sampling of the city and surroundings.

We like to walk but are not advese in driving to a location out of town. We enjoy good restaurants and one of us is vegetarian if anyone has suggestions that would be great.

We are staying at the Francis Marion Hotel.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Charleston Early November

We visited the small town of Beaufort and found it enchanting.

They have made the waterfront beautiful with swings to sit and watch the dolphins and scenery. There are nice little shops and a tour to be taken which tells of the town%26#39;s roll in the Civil War. We got a much different take on the causes for the first shots at Fort Sumter than we heard on the Fort Sumter tour in Charleston! Since the town was not burned, many beautiful homes remain. The tour was enjoyable.

    Party Boat and Snorkeling

My husband and I will be in MB next week and I am trying to determine whether there are any companies that offer party cruises, with or without fishing for a half a day. We just want the gorgeous ocean atmosphere with lots of drinks. Fishing would make it even more fun!

How about snorkeling? I can find a lot of info on scuba diving, but nothing for snorkeling. Any ideas/advice?

    Thanks,

    Heather

    Party Boat and Snorkeling

Snorkeling is not popular on the South Carolina coast. The water is normal Atlantic Ocean water - clean, but not the crystal clear Caribbean blue - and there are not shallow water reefs that lend themselves to pleasant snorkeling. Serious divers enjoy ocean and river diving around wrecks, etc.; but this is not a great area for picturesque diving and looking at colorful aquatic life.

    Aiken Horse Trials question...

I have a question that I hope some Aiken experts can help me with. I am from Boston and have always wanted to attend the Aiken Trials in March. I wanted to plan to come for the 2008 thoroghbred flat races, which from what I understand is one part of the Triple Crown. I have read about past dates and how the races are part of a three consecutive week event in Aiken, but no where on the internet or by trying to call or email the Aiken Horse Trials website can I get information about the upcoming March 2008 dates or how to obtain tickets from out of state. Is it just too early to get information yet? Does anyone have any information out there that can help? I really wanted to plan in advance to make sure I secure a reservation at The Willcox, which is a place I%26#39;ve always wanted to stay and to find the best airfares too. Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

    Aiken Horse Trials question...

The Trials (the first event of the Triple Crown) is sponsored by the local Jaycees; they do all of the ticket sales for this event. They probably have not started work on ticket sales for this yet since their other big event of the year, the Western Carolina State Fair, is scheduled for next month. I am sure that they are concentrating all their energy %26amp; work on the fair right now. They do have a website: www.aikenjaycees.com. However, everything on it right now is about the fair. They probably won%26#39;t start working on the Trials until mid to late November at the earliest.

The dates have not yet been posted, but I would guess that it will likely be on March 8. That is just a guess though.

Definitely plan to rent a car. There is no commercial air service to Aiken, so you will have to fly into Augusta, Ga (around 20 miles from Aiken) or Columbia, SC (55 miles from Aiken). Most locals prefer to fly in %26amp; out of Columbia as it is a bigger and much nicer airport. At the Willcox you will be within walking distance of downtown but not of the track for the Trials.

    Aiken Horse Trials question...

Thanks so much, your post was very helpful. I will keep checking the Jaycees website as we get closer towards the end of the year. In the meantime, I really appreciate your help. I may be back asking more questions about Aiken in the future too...

i am needing help to find an hotel near the base. my son is graduation for boot camp.and we want to find an nice and clean palce to stay for an coulpe days.thanks

This is an old post, but I will be attending my son%26#39;s boot camp graduation on April 15 and would love to have the benefit of anyone%26#39;s past experience. We%26#39;re thinking of staying in either a bed and breakfast, or a decent hotel near Fort Jackson. Any recommendations. THanks.

Claussen%26#39;s Inn in Five Points is great. So is The Whitney on Devine Street. I would avoid most hotels near Ft Jackson as they are generally dirty.

    Enjoy your stay in Columbia.

Hello my mother-in-law and I are attending my fiancee%26#39;s graduation from boot camp are there any suggestions for the hotels that are closest to Fort Jackson

ello, My mother-in-law and I are looking for hotels closest to the army base. My fiancee%26#39;s graduation is On April 22 and we would like great hotels that are close to Fort Jackson

    Msgrayson,

Most of the hotels/motels near Fort Jackson aren%26#39;t very nice. I%26#39;d suggest staying downtown, which is much more interesting than the Fort Jackson area. There is a newly renovated Marriott on Main St. near the state capitol. There%26#39;s a relatively new Hampton Inn in the Vista (Gervais St.) which is supposedly pretty nice. Other hotels are also in the vicinity.

Downtown Columbia to Fort Jackson is usually about a 15-20 minute drive or cab ride, depending on time of day and traffic. This isn%26#39;t a huge city, so I wouldn%26#39;t consider staying somewhere close to FJ to be an issue.

Msgrayson, also check out the Whitney Hotel (http://www.whitneyhotel.com/). It%26#39;s a little closer to Fort Jackson than the Main St./Vista area. The Whitney is in a nice residential/commercial part of town with good restaurants and shops nearby.

MB ocean VS NJ shore ocean

    is there a difference between MB ocean water %26amp;

    New Jersey ocean water?

MB ocean VS NJ shore ocean

From what I%26#39;ve been told there%26#39;s quite a bit of difference in the water temperature. The Myrtle Beach ocean water is much warmer.

I%26#39;ve never been to New Jersey but this is what I%26#39;ve heard from a friend of mine.

    Ron

MB ocean VS NJ shore ocean

Sister lived in Red Bank area of Jersey. Always said there was no comparison between the two. SC beaches are much wider with more surf.

The ocean water in SC is much warmer, and it will stay warm enough to swim at least into October. Surf depends on which beaches you are comparing and on which day.

    Thanks Guys!

I LOVE the fact that it will still be warm early October -

Is it clearer than Jersey Shore?

    THX

Yes I have been to Wildwood many times in late July-August and it was ok but not as warm as Myrtle Beach. We just came back from there and it was very nice to swim in, very warm.

Much of the SC beach is absolutely pristine. MB is not as pristine as some because the area is heavily developed.

The ocean water is not clear, like in the Caribbean, but it is not polluted. The Atlantic Ocean churns up a lot of natural silt.

I live in NJ and come to MB each year. The water is better in MB than NJ, warmer and clearer, and no beach tags required either!

    THANKS EVERYONE-

Hoping the water still be warm enough to swim

%26amp; the air temps will be nice.

I don%26#39;t know about NJ beaches, but living in Maryland I know you can%26#39;t walk on the beach past a certain time of the evening in our Ocean City. In Myrtle Beach I enjoy walking around 8 or 9 pm and there are loads of people walking too!

That%26#39;s terrible that you can%26#39;t walk on the beach after dark in OC,

we can in the family towns at the NJ shore but not Seaside or

    places like that.

I hope we go to MB because I really don%26#39;t want to drive an extra

9 hours to Florida. It will all depend on the temps then.

    Hot Dogs

Actually you%26#39;ll find great hot dogs at Central Park in Conway. It%26#39;s a little drive thru place on a triangular corner. LOVE EM!

    Hot Dogs

My vote is for Peaches Corner! Thats the only place in MB I%26#39;ve ever gotten a hot dog.

Is every hot dog place in Myrtle on a corner?I seem to remember my son telling me about a Sams Corner for hot dogs.

They have certainly cornered the market for hot dogs.

North Charleston Inn 2 Million dollor renovation is a...

First let me say- always have someone personally check out hotels you are not familiar with. Do not listen to the hotel staff. They LIE! I called the North Charleston Inn on West Montague Ave. for reservations for 10 rooms for a group coming to town for a charity bowling event. I was told by the gentleman in group sales they were on the tail end of a $2 mill. rennovation to the hotel. What a lie. Every room had holes in the walls. Half of the walls were painted one color and the other was another. Leaking pipes, wet carpet, large holes in bedding, stains on comforters, items promised not in rooms such as irons and heaven forbid you need towels. Take my advise and stay far, far away from the North Charleston Inn. Pictures on their website are soooo not what your get!!!!!!

North Charleston Inn 2 Million dollor renovation is a...

Yikes! That sounds scary. I have not personally been to that hotel, but I have seen it from the interstate and it does not look welcoming. And I would like to know where that $2 million renovations went too?

North Charleston Inn 2 Million dollor renovation is a...

The Air Force doesn%26#39;t even allow us to stay there anymore. There are a lot of illegal activities happening in this ';ho';tel. It used to be the Days Inn. In order for this place to be rennovated, they must start from the ground up. TEAR IT DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am just trying to find a clean place to stay in the area and majority sound awful from the top to the bottom there are negative comments in the Charleston area. I will not stay at the North Charlie Inn based on the negative comments I have seen. Lookis like you have to spend 175$ for a place in town and about the same in their ';burbs'; for a clean place to stay.

In Cali we may not have their grandeur but we also do nto have their trash either.

This was never a Days Inn as the person below states. The Days Inn is still there - just two doors down. This was actually the Ramada, and it is VERY old. The Ramada sign actually blew down in Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and landed on the roof. I had to attend a seminar here in the ballroom. The most memorable event of the seminar was when a roach crawled across one of the participant%26#39;s feet. Needless to say, we did not eat lunch here - even though it was included with the seminar. Even the person conducting the seminar stated that he had a roach in his shower. This motel just needs to be demolished and rebuilt. It is OLD!

    State Fair

Driving from Anderson to the fair this Oct,. and would like to know any thoughts on a hotel close to the Fair and or airport., since we will be flying out from there. Thanks

    State Fair

What price range are you looking for?

    State Fair

In the downtown Columbia I could recommend the Inn at USC and the Marriott. The Embassy Suites is convenient to both the fair grounds as well as the airport.

Near the airport, there is a Comfort Inn as well as a Sleep Inn (although I have never been in these).

There are several really nice hotels downtown, which is VERY close to the fairgrounds area (about a mile):

    * The Inn at USC - www.innatusc.com

    * a new Hilton in downtown - www.hilton.com

    * Hampton Inn on Gervais St. (# 1 ranked hotel in the area on Trip Advisor) - www.hamptoninn.com

    * Courtyard by Marriott (on Assembly St.) - www.marriott.com -- this was JUST renovated, and the renovations were completed about a month ago

when in the Columbia area- I usually stay at Homewood Suites near the zoo- love it.

  • London Calling

    Hello,

I know you%26#39;ve heard it a thousand times already, but please forgive me and help us decide where to stay.

My wife and I are driving up from Savannah on Mon%26#39; 8th Oct%26#39;, and are slightly confused as to where to stay.

Somewhere lively and busy with great bars and restaurants would be just the ticket, just can%26#39;t decide what part of M/B would suit us. The grand plan is to book in somewhere that takes our fancy, and then stay over, maybe 5 days, maybe longer, depending on how much fun we%26#39;re having.Because of the time of year, we%26#39;re thinking that finding somewhere to stay will not be a problem

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers.

    London Calling

Actually, Sept. and Oct. are very popular months to visit the Myrtle Beach area ( we just got back). It%26#39;s not nearly as crowded as the summer months, but draws a lot of folks without school age children and the golfers love that time of year as well.

It sounds like you might be interested in the area around Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle, or the Barefoot Landing area of North Myrtle.

You can find extensive info on both of those venues on their websites (broadwayatthebeach.com or bflanding.com) . Our personal favorite for a great evenings entertainment is Crocodile Rocks - Dueling Piano Bar at Broadway. There are several hotels adjacent to Broadway, and Barefoot Landing has Barefoot Resort just across the waterway if you%26#39;re not set on staying oceanfront. Either of those options would give you quick and easy access to restaurants, bars, etc. with Broadway probably being the livelier of the two.

    London Calling

  • Can anyone recommend a large house in Sea Pines?

I would love to hear from folks who had rented a large (6 - 8 bedrooms) in or near Sea Pines. What did you like about your house, and what did you dislike?

My family of 14 is looking for a house to rent in June %26#39;08. We would like oceanfront (wouldn%26#39;t we all!) but it looks as if most of those are gone already, and many are over our budget. We are looking to spend $6K - maybe up to $8K, and would prefer Sea Pines. A glimpse of the ocean and a nice path to the beach would thrill us.

    Thanks in advance,

    Liz

Can anyone recommend a large house in Sea Pines?

We rented a home on Dune Lane in NFB area. It was spectacular- an elevator, private pool and spa along with 6 bdrms and 5 bathrooms. There were also 2 laundry rooms! I loved this location because everything was walkable- stores, ice cream shops, coffeee shops, grocery stores and many many restaurants. We never needed our car. However -we werent%26#39; ocean front- we were one row back(there was a house between us and the ocean). Beach access was at the end of our street maybe 25 yrds away.

This was $4400 for Easter week in April(also Heritage week). Let me know if you want more info. We rented from VRBO and the owner was great.

Can anyone recommend a large house in Sea Pines?

I see #81300 on Dune Lane, but it is $12,900 a week summer, $7,500 in winter. Was that it?

    Thanks!

    It was vrbo 20000

Thanks, I will check it out!

I probably should have clarified that it wasn%26#39;t in Sea Pines- we prefer this area for the reasons I mentioned.

I rented a beautiful vacation home in the Singleton Beach area that was spectacular. It was located directly on the beach and not as crowded as the Sea Pines area. I rented from Hilton Head Rentals and Golf and I know they have properties throughout the island including Sea Pines. I highly recommend contacting them either through their website http://hiltonheadvacation.com/ or their phone number is (800) 445-8664. We like to golf but aren%26#39;t experts and they helped us select golf courses that weren%26#39;t too intimidating and even set up tee times for us. Also, we got a good selection of recommended restaurants and even some coupons from their staff. Tell them Amy from Colorado referred you.

Have a great trip. I love Hilton Head!!!

Where to stay, do I need a car?

Hey planning a trip late OCtober, where do we stay? will we need to rent a car?

You will need a car to see the sights around Charleston. YOu need to give more info before suggesting ';where to stay';. Do you want a luxury hotel, cheap motel, B %26amp; B, mid-range, beach house...etc... please specify. Best wishes.

Where to stay, do I need a car?

Read through the forum about staying in Historic Charleston or down in Kiaway or over in Mt. Pleasant or IOP.

Where you stay mostly depends on what you want to do. Explore the city only, stay in the city. Want to stay on the beach and explore the city and outlying area, stay near or on a beach so you can start and end your day there.

    Good luck!

Check out the posting from this spring What I Did on My Spring Break. It is from someone else from Southern California and is very good with a lot of things covered. You will have a great time!

There isnt going to be much to do if your planning on staying two weeks in Chaleston/Savannha on 3500 dollars. A five star room like you want would eat that up in no time.

A budget tip: Rentals at the beaches are a BARGAIN in March. You might even luck into some good beach weather.

For the Charleston area, check cottages and condos at Kiawah, Seabrook, Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, and Sullivans Island. You can save money by eating some meals at home, and plenty left over to park and dine in Charleston.

    Avoid Atlanta.

Sorry! I hit the button too quick. My husband and I were just in Atlanta last week on vacation. We went there on our 1 week trip to the south. Atlanta was our first stop. We went to Six Flags there, but had some time to kill the first day, so we drove downtown Atlanta. We were there on a Saturday night. The guidebooks all said to go to a place called Underground Atlanta. It was, notice I said ';was'; where all the fabulous restaurants and shops were during the %26#39;96 Olympics. Granted, it was a great place, at one time. It was a little city built underneath the city complete with storefronts and cobblestone streets. But, there was nothing left to do there. We were starving so we walked all our Atlanta looking for a nice restaurant to eat at. Nothing at all was open. That city rolls up its carpet at 5pm!! We were willing to settle after 2 hours for McDonalds, there were closed too. At 7pm at night!! Atlanta was pretty during the day. Braves stadium, Margaret Mitchell House, Olympic Park, but there are so much prettier cities in the South. Charleston, Savannah, etc. Hope this helps!!! Have a great trip! I know we will never forget ours!

I live just south of Atlanta and go to the city quite often. We have a lot of wonderful restaurants, and things to do. I%26#39;ve never encountered the city asleep by 7:00. Check out the Fox Theatre Website www.foxtheatre.org and see if they have anything running during your vacation time. If so it is definitely worth the trip, the theatre alone is beautiful and worth exploring. If you do decide to come see us, check out atlanta.citysearch.com for a list of restaurants near the Fox. They will list several within walking distance - you won%26#39;t have to pay for more parking. You can get some really good rates through Priceline for some really nice hotels in Buckhead. I lived in Charleston for 10 years and miss is a lot. Go back whenever I get the chance. There is a city just outside of Charleston called Summerville - nickname Flowertown in the Pines. They have an annual Flowertown Festival. You can check www.summervilleymca.org/flowertown for the specific dates. If the festival isn%26#39;t going on the town is still worth the drive, just go west on I-26 to exit 199A and you are on main street. The downtown ';green'; has some pleasant shops and great restaurants..if you like Greek go to The Continental Corner and Gilligan%26#39;s has some great seafood, if you like BBQ, try Sticky Fingers. You can%26#39;t go wrong with any of those. The Woodlands has some top notch $$$ rooms as well as quite a few nice B%26amp;B%26#39;s as well. Hope you have a great time in both Charleston and Atlanta if you come to see us...We also have the new Georgia Aquarium (haven%26#39;t been myself yet,but I hear it%26#39;s wonderful)..

I am a native Savannahian turned Charlestonian so I hope I can help you! There is so much to do and see in both places.

    Lodging-

Charleston- your best bet would probably be to rent a beach house. I am partial to the laid back feel of Sullivan%26#39;s Island, however, Isle of Palms is nice too. You can get great rates in the spring. Here is a link to one of the local providers.

Savannah- Inn or B%26amp; B would be the way to go. Here is one that I really like ( with great rates) but there are tons to choose from.

    Things to do:

    Charleston-

    First, try this site vacationsmadeeasy.com/CharlestonSC/鈥ndex.cfm

Walk the bridge. It%26#39;s free and it is great exercise.

Downtown- carriage tour/stroll the market. Also on Friday%26#39;s The Citadel has a free public dress parade that is nice to watch.

Islands- explore the forts! Lots of fun and very reasonably priced. Rent a bicycle or a kayak. Great way to explore the islands

Savannah- Activities are pretty limited to the downtown area. However, if you are a history buff, Fort Pulaski is not to be missed.

Cumberland Island is a 2 hour drive and a WONDERFUL day trip. However you must arrive early or you will miss the ferry.

It seems that you will be in Sav. in time for St Patricks day. This is the biggest celebration of the year and is sort of Mardi Gra esque. Its is a ton of fun but is not for everyone. Book your room now (and dont be surprised if the rates are sky high). A good resource for activities in the Savannah area is the local CVB.

If you want more specific information regarding anything above, let me know! Hope you enjoy your trip!

I live in Charleston and also love Savannah. A great side trip from Chs is to go to Brookgreen Gardens north of Georgetown (about a 2 hr drive). The plantings are beautiful and filled with sculptures. Besides the gardens, there are other activites from wildlife viewing, boat rides, a restaurant, and shop. Beaufort, SC, is a delightful small version of Chs/Sav and between the two. Great walking town with many restaurants and beautiful homes. The Donnelley Wildlife Preserve 30 miles south of Chs is free and has hiking trails and all sorts of wildlife.
