Trip Report - Ocean Forest Condo 7/28 - 8/4

Trip Report – Ocean Forest – Disgusting Condo VRBO #28766 – Do not rent this. On Saturday – 7/28 we arrived at Ocean Forest to a miserably hot condo on the 20th floor. The only thing good about the condo is the view. First of all the elevators at Ocean Forest are the slowest I have ever experienced and one was usually broken leaving only 1 regular elevator for a 23 story building. There was also a service elevator that you could use sometimes. The door lock to this unit took me at least 5 minutes each time to lock and/or unlock. It’s a regular dead bolt and was beyond terrible. The room had a weird smell and no amount of Lysol could get it to go away and I tried, really tried. The shower curtain has several inches of mold at the bottom. One interior door has a place where a fist went into it. Urgently needs maintenance. The air conditioning was not working when we arrived and only worked occasionally when we were there. By Wednesday, it did not work at all again. I immediately called the owner to discuss the a/c and he never returned my call. Bedroom television does not work and the sink light in the kitchen is broke. I drive a Ford Escape SUV. The parking garage was made for midget cars but that was supposed to be okay since there was an outdoor SUV lot. Day 2 – security guard made me move my car so I had to park on the street. There really is no decent parking on the street. So each day I would again go in and explain that I drive a SUV and can’t fit in the garage. Each time the rude desk people tell me too bad, I’m not on the list. By Tuesday evening, they are now giving out tickets if you park in the SUV lot and aren’t on their list. There is no parking left on the street so I have to have 2 teenage girls get out at night, in a dark garage, and help me squeeze my vehicle into a parking space on the 3rd floor. Then we have the pleasure of walking down a dark, dirty stairwell to get back to the lobby. The girls were terrified. We also have a different security guard make lewd remarks and passes at the girls in the elevator. By Wednesday, the hot water heater in the unit is pouring out onto the floor. I have to toss out some of my stuff that is soaked. I still can’t get the Owner on the phone and when I try to get someone from the front desk to help me (and the hotels home owner rep), they all disappear. I load up my stuff and wait out in the hall for over 30 minutes before I can finally get it down to the lobby where I load of my SUV and get the heck out of that dump. A maintenance man told us that something is continually broken there – usually the elevators and that that very same day they had a leak on the 23rd floor and had to shut off all the water to the building. Do not every stay in this unit nor anywhere else at Ocean Forest. I have paid for a full week and it’s so bad that I leave on Wednesday morning and go check into Beach Colony for my last 3 days.

Gosh thats awful. For the most part VRBO%26#39;s get good reviews, I personally have used the service, but the past week or so you are the 2nd person to have a horrible experience with VRBO. I will not recommend them anymore, you absolutely have no recourse should it not be what you paid for. I would make a new post with the comment about OCEAN FOREST-NASTY, not just part of your other trip report, make sure it stands out.

Trip Report - Ocean Forest Condo 7/28 - 8/4

Good idea.

I%26#39;m getting really nervous! We%26#39;re doing our first VRBO next month.

When you are in a hotel %26amp; the conditions are deplorable you can refuse to stay there (been there, done that), but with VRBO, we%26#39;ll be stuck.

That%26#39;s correct. This was my first and last time doing VRBO. While I%26#39;m sure that most of the places are great, I figure that my one week a year vacation is just not worth the gamble. I%26#39;ll stick to renting from the facility itself or at least thru a rental agency. Honestly, I%26#39;m sticking to renting directly from the hotel for a while at least until the memories of this start to fade.

You could rent from a motel or hotel and the whole place is a dump? Most of the time realty companies have something else, either in the place you%26#39;re staying or down the road. Most of the time they%26#39;ll switch you. I%26#39;d guess most vrbo or other rent by owner places would be good ones to vacation in but I%26#39;d also guess there are some dumps. Some owners do a great job of keeping up their vacation property and updating it. Sometimes they get comments emailed to them such as these...

1____';We had a great vacation and loved the condo. Thanks so much!'; JK,NC

2____ ';Generally, my family stays at the Kingston Plantation in Myrtle Beach for our vacation. We are very pleased with your condo. We went on-line this morning to schedule our 2007 vacation.';... RC,KY

3____';We had commented last week, you have provided everything and more for anyone with all the top quality furnishings. The kitchen is great (I love the flatware) the bathrooms are well equipped and clean. Our best and thank you and your family for the vacation.';....SC, NC

4____';Everything was wonderful! The place was immaculate. The furniture was beautiful. Love the counter tops and all the space in the bathroom. It was one of our best vacations. We hope to be able to go back again your place is wonderful. Thanks again for everything.';....KC, PA

5____';We had a great time and the condo was one of the best I have ever rented. I thought Gatilinburg has the best but you have them beat. We hope you have a blessed Christmas.” …BL,TN

11___”I can honestly say there was nothing you could have done to improve our stay. Everything was great. I was surprised at all you had, especially in the kitchen. We did a lot of cooking so it was nice to see things like measuring cups and spoons and enough pots and pans to cook a large meal. The TV was an added bonus. We had a great time and enjoyed your beautiful condo. Thanks so much and I hope we can visit again.”

BV, MA

12__';We really enjoyed the condo and appreciated the red book and your efforts to make our stay enjoyable. Everything we needed was provided and I can%26#39;t think of anything I missed. 18__ “We enjoyed everything about the condo. You have done a great job in furnishing the condo. We want to come back next year the third week of June providing everyone can make it that week. I%26#39;ll let you know more later. Again, we all enjoyed everything--even the parking was easy and not hard to find a space. Thanks again for a wonderful home away from home.” … PM,OH

19__” We thoroughly enjoyed your condo. Everything was perfect. The red book was a great help. The view was breathtaking. Thanks so much for letting us use your home. It was the first time I had been to Myrtle Beach and your home made it enjoyable.” MS, KY

20__”Thanks for letting us rent your condo. It was great. I was very impressed with it. It was roomy and everything was decorated so cute. This was my niece’s 1st visit to the beach and they had a great time. Emma (4.5) even cried when we left. Thanks again for everything and we hope to rent from you next year. …MK, WV

gonefishin, are these comments from a condo you own, or just random comments? (just curious)

I%26#39;ve used VRBO twice and both condos were great. (one was at Ocean Forest Plaza) The elevators and parking garage were the pits though.

One I own...not at Ocean Forest. I advertise on 4 different for rent by owner sites and vrbo is one. I just did not want all VRBO condos or houses to get thrown under the bus. 1000%26#39;s and 1000%26#39;s are great places to stay throughout the world; usually at the best deal possible.

    Trip Report 鈥?Attractions 7/28 鈥?8/4

We came, we saw and we did! They are all expensive but that was expected.

Broadway at the Beach 鈥?lots of fun looking at the shops, enjoyed the Imax 3D (Sharks) but wish the volume was a bit lower. Also saw a movie at the cinema and they have such comfy seats. Road one of the old Pavilion rides 鈥?way too overpriced. Only bad point is that we attempted to go to the Tuesday fireworks. Major mistake, no parking at all, people were even parking in the grass and up on the curbs. We left.

The Strip 鈥?went down around 4:30 and paid to park. All the stores carry the same stuff, lots of drug use items and the sayings on the shirts are getting more disgusting than I remember. There are some really creepy people hanging around, some working in the shops and others just hanging out. No way would I go out down there after dark, absolutely no way. We actually went back a second time but made sure it was early in the day again. I will say the Old Tyme Portraits place has is air conditioned was very nice and clean and my daughter loved getting her picture done.

Ripley鈥檚 Movie Motion Thing 鈥?Girls loved it and did it twice. I think it鈥檚 over priced but they were willing to pay for the second time with their own money so it must have rated very highly for them.

Ripley鈥檚 Haunted House 鈥?Loved it! We did this one morning and the girls were scared out of their minds but loved it and we almost did it a second time. I just watched from the street and got to see them being chased by the chainsaw dude. They rated this as their very favorite thing we did.

Medieval Times 鈥?Fun show, the gorgeous Blue Knight threw a flower to my daughter. They got a hug from him after the show as well. Food was good but way more than we could eat.

Coastal Grand Mall 鈥?Huge, did a little back to school shopping.

Dixie Stampede 鈥?Loved the new opening act, he was terrific. Great show, delicious food but again was way too much to eat.

Barefoot Landing 鈥?Girls want a henna tattoo and we get one at Musical Genius because it looks clean and safe. I would not let them get one down on the strip earlier. Walk around a bit. I love Black Market Minerals. Girls did the Mirrormaze and have fun with it but I thought it was a huge waste of money.

Family Kingdom 鈥?We went early while it was still really hot but the lines were short. Girls did the rollercoaster over and over and the sling shot thing too. Spent about 3 hours there and had a good time, just expensive. Did not play games nor buy food there.

    Trip Report - Attractions 7/28 - 8/4

Which did you prefer- Dixie Stampede or Medieval Times? We are coming down in 2 weeks and would like to do one of those. Our kids are 11 and 6 and the little one LOVES horses.

Can you give me any suggestions on the pros and cons of each.

    THANKS!!!!

    Trip Report - Attractions 7/28 - 8/4

I liked them both but honestly I loved Dixie Stampede th most. It has a wonderful Carriage Room opening act. I consider him to be one of the best parts of my vacation. The food is excellent at both but I love the Dixie Stampede soup. Dixie Stampede is brighter and you just get a more happy feeling, lots of comedy and some audience involvement too.

Medieval Times is also good but a much more dark atmosphere and lots of knights in battle. Though I will say they were some good looking knights! Older kids, especially boys, would prefer this one. You do get to meet the knights after the show which was nice. \

I don%26#39;t think you could go wrong with either one but I prefer Dixie Stampede.

Thank you for the input! I was leaning towards Dixie, and now I think that will be the place we%26#39;ll try. : )

    Marriott Surf Watch

I recently booked a week in a 3 bedroom condo at Surf watch in HHI. Which building should I request? I have 2 boys - 5 year old and a 1 year old. Any reccomendations for good restaurants and activities for their ages?

Any comments in general about Surf Watch?

    Marriott Surf Watch

Just returned yesterday from 1 week at HHI. Have been going everfy other year for 12 years and still love it. Son is now 14 and said this wad one of the best vacation ever. Almost any restaurant you go to is great and you can spend a small fortune to just wingat Wild Wings one night. Yuo have got to take your 5 year old on the Craber J II. He%26#39;ll love catchnig crabs without any mess---just fun. Make sure yuo get the captain to laych a crab onto yuor son%26#39;s hat and grab a camera and go crazy.

Restaurants---Crazy Crab, Old Fort Pub (romantic), Wild Wings, lunch at Giuseppi';s PIzza, Marley%26#39;s Island Grill, Avoid eatnig at Salty Dog, but yuo have to go just to get T-shirts for the family

I just came back from a week in a 3 bedroom at SurfWatch. The 3 bedroom is FANTASTIC- rooms are beautiful, huge, and clean. The kitchen and living area are also really nice. We LOVED having our own bathrooms. Many of the buildings are a bit of a walk to the beach, but if you dial zero on your phone, reception will send a golf cart to your room to take your family to the beach. We were ib 5400, which we enjoyed. However, 5600 is closest to the beach (no golf cart necessary).

We ate in nicer restaurants, so I am not too sure about dining with a one year old. Stripes was wonderful, but probably not for little ones. At SurfWatch, lots of famililes with young children took advantage of the BBQs, so you could always BBQ a few nights instead of eating out.

One trip we all loved was the dolphin zodiac boat ride, off of South Beach.

HELP!! alt route of 501 & 17-coming from New Jersey

Ok Im now trying to figure out directions as Im getting a bit nervous hearing about traffic on 501 %26amp; 17. We want to definitely avoid that and go another route. We are going to the Windy Hill Section of North Myrtle Beach.

Someone suggested on another post they take 74 east around Lumberton, NC to 410S to 701S then 9E to 31S. Would this route be better or come out the same in time %26amp; distance as staying on 95 to Dillon as posted below.

Another route was to get off near dillon, I guess you%26#39;d be going down further on I-95 and getting off Rt 9 to 31S. When I looked on the map though it looked like I would just stay on Rt 9 which from what I saw went right into North Myrtle Beach??? Please clarify this for me

Do these directions also apply to North Myrtle Beach.

HELP!! alt route of 501 %26amp; 17-coming from New Jersey

I would like to know the answer to this also!! Anything to make the trip easier. We are coming from NY in August and am getting nervous about the traffic on a Saturday.

It sounds like Myrtle beach is packed during the summer. I hope we haven%26#39;t made a bad choice in going in August. People are saying the even the supermarkets are so crowded!

HELP!! alt route of 501 %26amp; 17-coming from New Jersey

You are going on vacation-unless you go to the remote backwoods of Wyoming-you will find people everywhere you go. Summer months are typical vacation months, MB is a very popular destination but most beach locations are. July is worse then August, but you will still find alot of people here and they are going to be shopping, eating, playing. I can%26#39;t think of another destination that won%26#39;t be crowded, but I will say there are probably other places that have better interstates, MB is not the easiest place to drive to, but once you are here, you can move around okay. Also what 2 places will you find the most people in one area-Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing-shopping, eating, entertainment venues. Go during the week and try to avoid them on the weekends, do other things, go other places.

    bump up

Just got back from a week in Surfside. We usually stop off at the South of the Border on the way down. We left northern NJ at 2:15 and arrived in Dillon at around 11 am. I took route 9 to 31 to 544 to 17 Bypass and it took just about an hour and 50 minutes to get to Hooters in Murrells inlet. I tend to drive above the posted limit, 80+ on Interstates and 70 in a 55 etc but nothing crazy unless there is a bunch of rabbits to run with. I encountered some traffic at the 9/31 junction and the 544/17 and the 17/GlennsBay intersections (stay in the right lane) but nothing too bad. I really get frustrated at the length of the traffic lights. While I%26#39;m sure there is some science involved, I don%26#39;t see how sitting at a light for a what seems like 5 minutes helps traffic flow. On the way home I took 544 to 31 to 9 to 17 to 140 to 40 to 95 and was in VA in just under 4 hours (not bad). Unfortunately, VA took 4.5 on it%26#39;s own. All in all it took just under 12 hours each way stoppping once for gas and a quick breakfast (MickeyDs) and 2 or 3 bathroom breaks.

Route 9 takes you all the way to the beach in NMB. Rte 9 merges with 17 south for about 1/2 mile. Once you pass over the Intercoastal, you take the Cherry Grove exit, which is a continuation of Rte 9.

Relax as best you can, you%26#39;re on vacation. There%26#39;s lots of alternatives coming from the north. The general suggestion is avoid 501, grocery stores and WalMarts on Saturday%26#39;s after 11. If you think this traffic is bad, try a ';bear jam'; at Yellowstone.

shiritsu will the route you took take me to North Myrtle Beach, Windy Hill area? Im not sure where Sureside is

Hwy 9 will take you to Cherry Grove/North Myrtle Beach to Windy Hill. Surfside is south of Myrtle Beach and you do not need to worry about those directions since you are heading north not south for Windy Hill. Traffic is inevitble in MB. This pastFriday night traffic from Hwy 17 in North MB to Broadway at the Beach was just a pain in the rear, several people said it felt like July 4th holiday traffic. We had a hard time finding anywhere to eat, we prefer to sit at the bar and even those were all taken. We finally ate at Logans Steak House, good meal, in NMB but it was a chore to find something.

Ginger - I was just commenting on the route I took for others that may be staying on the southern beaches. Like others have said, since you are staying in NMB you wouldn%26#39;t need to jump on 31 as 9 will take you there. The best advice is to try to arrive as early as you can and stay off 501, especially if you%26#39;re staying in NMB. Sorry I took the post a little off topic.

thanks for the directions again. I think i got it - just stay away from 501!! We are hopefully going to leave a day early so would make it there on Friday.

%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Someone suggested on another post they take 74 east around Lumberton, NC to 410S to 701S then 9E to 31S. Would this route be better or come out the same in time %26amp; distance as staying on 95 to Dillon as posted below.

This is the route I take and have no complaints. I%26#39;ve never hit any traffic, but 410 and 701 are single lane (though you can pass). If staying in NMB, just stay on Rte 9 - no need to take 31 South.

    Good luck !

    Hotel Recomendation

    Hello Everyone,

Can someone recommend a hotel for myslf and husband. We plan on going to Myrtle Beach Labor Day weekend and would like to stay on the beach and close to the local attractions and restaurants. We are in aour mid 30%26#39;s and this will be our first time visiting.

    Thanks for your help everyone!

    Hotel Recomendation

It%26#39;s been a few years since we%26#39;ve been to MB but we too are going over labor day.

With SOOOO many choice, it was difficult making a decision...but we decided on Long Bay Resort with the help of this board the their rating on TripAdvisor.

    Good luck!

    Hotel Recomendation

Well if it%26#39;s just the 2 of you, I would say:

    -Marriott Grande Dunes

    -Marriott OceanWatch Villas

-Paradise Towers at the Breakers Resort

    -Island Vista

Just returned from one week at the Marriott Grande Dunes,,,Very nice.

Our first trip to Myrtle Beach we stayed at the Ocean Reef. It was a great experience. We did have two kids with us, and there was a lot of families there, but we also met a very nice couple staying for their anniversary (no kids). I think even without kids it is nice. Nothing fancy, but clean, and not far from everything. The price isn%26#39;t bad either.

Have a great time- we went once and got hooked, we love MB! We go every summer!

Paradise Reosrt, Grand Atlantic, and Holiday Sands are three brand new resorts less that a year old.

    Photography and nature spots

We%26#39;re avid photographers, and we%26#39;ll be visiting HH next week (Aug. 11). Where would you recommend we go for photographing birds and/or sunsets? Any other wildlife too. Or are there favorite nature spots in general that you would recommend? We%26#39;ve been going to Hilton Head for years with our children, and we%26#39;ve done all the family-type stuff......putt-putting, children%26#39;s activities, fireworks, crabbing, etc. This time we%26#39;ll be without children (they%26#39;re grown), and we%26#39;ll have time to pursue some more %26#39;old-fogey%26#39; pursuits. :) Thanks for any help.

    Photography and nature spots

Plenty of spots for you to Bird and photograph wildlife.

Just off the island and on the bridge is Pinckney nature preserve. This is run by the National Park Service. The park has a number of nature trails and you can spend hours there.

SeaPines and Hilton Head Plantations have preserves which yu can walk and find wildlife. The one in Hilton Head Plantation has several Whooping Cranes as residents.

There is another one on Palmetto Bay Road which is run by the Audobon Society.

A great park with scenic views is Jarvis Creek. Entrances are on 278 and behind Wendys near the Walmart back entrance. You should also not miss Honey Horn.

For a great sunset and history go to the ruins of Fort Mitchell. It is right next to the Old Fort Pub in Hilton Head Plantation. If you look across Port Royal Sound from there, you can see Parris Island. Viewing it from Hilton Head, it is hard to believe, that all that green is where Jarheads are made.

Finallly, The Sunset is also nice across Calibogue Bay in Harbor town.

    Stan (hhiguy)

    Photography and nature spots

Thanks so much! We went to Pinckney Nature Preserve many years ago with our children, and it was an almost surreal experience. We HEARD nothing and we SAW nothing, except for one spider in a huge web, and it was oppressively hot and muggy. But I think we should just pack the bug spray and give it another try on this trip. Your other suggestions we didn%26#39;t know about, so we%26#39;ll certainly check them out. I have no idea what Honey Horn is, but I%26#39;ll Google it and find out.

We plan to eat at the Old Fort Pub one night......never been in all the years we%26#39;ve been going.......so we%26#39;ll plan a visit to Fort Mitchell and try to time it at sunset. Do you know if Fort Mitchell is open in the evening? And I don%26#39;t suppose you know about what time the sun sets? If not, we%26#39;ll check when we get there. I just thought it would be helpful in determining what time to make dinner reservations.

I%26#39;ve enjoyed your other posts.......it%26#39;s wonderful that you%26#39;re so willing to help others. Hilton Head is such a great place, and we%26#39;re really looking forward to our trip.

    Thanks again!

  • Best route from NJ to Charleston Area ---how to Avoid DC??

Anyone have any suggestions on best way to avoid DC traffic heading south to Charleston? I think we%26#39;ve tried most everything but would love any more ideas! It can take hours if you hit heavy traffic, accidents, etc... and it almost doesn%26#39;t matter what time! We drive regularly from NJ to SC. Thanks!

Best route from NJ to Charleston Area ---how to Avoid DC??

See my post under South Carolina.

Best route from NJ to Charleston Area ---how to Avoid DC??

You could try I-95 to I-695 to I-97 to route 301 (across the Potomac) to route 207 (which hits I-95 north of Richmond). We did this years ago to get from Baltimore to King%26#39;s Dominion. Much less stressful drive.

I live in DC and use 95 daily and just returned from a trip to Charleston via 95.

My best advice: 1. Make sure you have an EZ pass for all those tolls between NJ and DC. 2. Plan your trip at a time when you%26#39;ll avoid rush hour in Baltimore and DC. That would be anytime between 8pm to 6am weekdays.

Last month we drove to Charleston and left DC around 9pm and got far enough south to N.Carolina and got a hotel room right off 95 and completed our trip the following day.

    Good luck!

Who has winter specials & packages??

Im looking to take my sweety for his first trip to Charleston in late Nov or early Dec as a surprise. And being that Im a college student and I also work, Im on a budget but dont want a dump either. What I was wondering ...is there any cheap deals the hotels are running for the winter? I prefer Mt. Pleasant area or closer that way, last time I stayed in N. Charleston and didnt care for it as much. I just want the place clean with a comfy bed, not really into all the fancy stuff. Thanks for your help ahead of time!

Who has winter specials %26amp; packages??

A couple of hotels I know of come to mind...both run winter specials. The first is on the Isle of Palms and is beachfront...the Seaside Inn, the second is in Mt. Pleasant right on Shem Creek...the Shem Creek Inn.

    www.seasideinniop.com

    www.shemcreekinn.com

Both of these hotels would be great for ya%26#39;ll. The winter special rates for these 2 properties probably won%26#39;t be set until late October or early November. 2 ways to handle it in my opinion. 1. Wait until the winter special rates are announced. You can visit both of the URL%26#39;s I have provided and sign up for their newsletters...you should receive an email when the specials are announced. 2. Book the hotel you choose now directly on the hotel%26#39;s website...this is important because neither of these hotels charge in advance like most Third Party Websites (Expedia, Orbitz and the like) do...and then check back when the winter special rate is announced and get your rate reduced.

I hope this helped you some.

    Justin

Who has winter specials %26amp; packages??

Ty Justin for your help...I keep looking and checking around but your right maybe it is too soon for the deals to be in effect.

No worries...right now everyone in hotels is focused on 2 things...surviving the summer and preparing for peak season in the fall.

We did the Inn at Middleton Place package one Christmas and loved it. The setting was beautiful, the food great..and we could stroll the grounds as much as we wanted. It was a great value, too! Check it out.

Just checked- their winter special is posted now.

  • Charleston Flea Market

Does anyone have any info on the flea market in Charleston? Mom loves these things so we%26#39;re trying to determine where it is and what days it%26#39;s open.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

    Charleston Flea Market

    Open Daily 10AM - 4PM, 365 Days a Year

Located in Downtown Historic Charleston, Between North and South Market Streets

When visiting Charleston, the City Market is a must to see. There are a total of four buildings spanning from Meeting Street to East Bay Street. An assortment of wares is sold by hundreds of vendors. Contrary to popular belief and hard to overcome, is the reputation of the City Market being a flea market. It is not! Most merchandise is first quality, some indicative to the area and some not. Sweet grass basket weavers can be seen in every building, along with, local artists, jewelry, tapestry, souvenirs, church dolls, afghans, rugs, rice, beans and sauces, local candies and cookies and much more. The horse and carriages gallop by with people from all over the world, restaurants line both North and South Market street. The atmosphere is festive and Southern.

Our Review Of Charleston - Anniversary Trip

My wife and I traveled to Charleston on July 12 for a long weekend to celebrate our one year anniversary. We were joined by two other couples, all from out of state. I cannot tell you how pleased we were with the city, its people and attractions. We had an absolute fabulous time. We conducted several hours worth of research and utilized trip advisor extensively to plan our trip. We also had the luxury of having friends and family that either live in the area or who have recently moved from Charleston to help us with our decisions. Many thanks to the participants on TA for your posts, they were invaluable and I hope this post helps others in the future.

    Market Pavilion Hotel

This hotel is located at the corner of Market St. and East Bay St. and is centrally located to the restaurants, market, and other attractions. We wanted an up-scale property and we really got it, this hotel was exceptional. Our group is well traveled and we were all impressed by this hotel. Our room was very spacious with a king sized bed, two chairs, a desk and up right cabinet that held the tv and two closets for our hanging clothes. The bathroom was great as well, with separate tub and glass-walled shower and plenty of room for my wife and me to share. The room and bathroom were both very clean and well maintained, probably the cleanest hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Every morning we were given a NYTimes and free coffee and pastries on our floor. That was fabulous as we just walked out and had everything right at our fingertips. We never ate breakfast as this tied us over until lunch! On the last evening, the hotel called us and gave us a complimentary upgrade to a king suite corner room for our anniversary. Oh my God, this was so nice and unexpected. The room was huge and had two balconies overlooking separate streets. The bathroom was incredible with a jacuzzi tub and a multi-head shower. I’m not sure how much this room costs, but if you want to splurge it would be a treat! Finally, every night our rooms were “turned-down” and we were given new towels – which was key as we took a high number of showers due to the heat.

As for negatives, there was a few. Most importantly (and also listed in former TA posts) our air conditioning in our room broke on Saturday and after 3 separate complaints it was never fixed. Luckily (or coincidentally) we were give our upgrade so we didn’t have to suffer in a room that was 74 degrees! Next, the couple that was traveling with us used the hotel’s concierge to help plan their trip to visit Kiawah Island and the private golf course. The gentleman did not give them very good information (that they would not have access to the course because it was private) and his demeanor and attitude was not what they would expect from a Southern hotel’s concierge. The couple decided to make the trip anyway, got into the course, had lunch at the clubhouse and toured the facilities. They had a great time and were perplexed by the concierge’s advice. Finally, I put this under the negatives since it involves the same property – there are two bars at the hotel, one downstairs next to the restaurant and one on the roof. The rooftop bar is very, very nice and was definitely a top place to visit and grab a drink, unfortunately the bars at this hotel are way overpriced. I would recommend to anyone visiting to go in and see the place, check out the view, and then leave, it’s not worth the price. We drank there two times, once it costs us $97 and the last night it cost us $12 for two beers. I live in DC and we don’t even have prices like that. To the hotel’s credit, I believe they use these prices to discourage the local young crowd to not frequent their property, but I don’t think that is reason to cause your guests from not visiting as well. Enforce a dress code (which they do), that will keep the college kids away!

    Restaurants

As mentioned above, we did a lot of research and spoke to quite a few people to make our choices in dining. We made reservations a month in advance and did not have any trouble getting a table. Here’s what we thought:

Fleet Landing (lunch) – we loved this place, great views and excellent seafood. Right on the water and walking distance from our hotel. The crab cake sandwich was excellent!

Jim %26amp; Nick’s BBQ (lunch) – second best lunch we had while we were in Charleston. The wait staff was exceptional and the bbq was fantastic. Four of us ate there and each one of our plates was great! Nice place to eat if you go shopping on King Street.

Poe’s Tavern on Sullivans Island (lunch) – this is a must visit spot, we loved it so much we went twice! There’s nothing fancy about it but the food was great and the atmosphere even better (seat yourself – and everyone is so polite while they wait). I don’t want to give away a local secret but it was well worth taking the trip from downtown to Sullivans!!

Red’s on Shem Creek (drinks and dinner) – we really enjoyed ourselves at Red’s. It was our first night in town so we were ready for a relaxed atmosphere and that’s what we got. It’s right on the water so you can look at the boats as the sun set, it was perfect and the staff was more than helpful when we had questions or ordered food (we ate in the crow’s nest and we had to carry the food up ourselves)!!

Coast (dinner) – we chose Coast due to its location near our friends’ hotel. The atmosphere inside is laid-back, busy and a little loud. The wait staff was average as was the food. Three people got the mahi mahi special and it was not what we expected from a seafood restaurant. Dry and bland. I did enjoy watching the chefs at work, they were amazing! Prices are lower than most which helped, with drinks, appetizers and desert our bill for two was $125.

Hanks (dinner) – we chose Hanks because we wanted more low country meals and good seafood. Hanks gave us both! Everyone really enjoyed their dinner here. It sophisticated dining without the stuffiness. The staff is very attentive and helpful and the meals were outstanding. My wife had the roasted grouper, the waiter said it was his #1 choice (she was going to go with the shrimp-n-grits) and it turned out to be her favorite meal of the weekend. I had the low country bouillabaisse, it was above average in taste but I would have like more shrimp and less mussels. Another one of our diners had the buttermilk fried chicken and just raved about how good it was. Again, we had a 3 course meal with drinks and it was $140.

Peninsula Grill (dinner) – we chose Peninsula for our anniversary dinner and we were not disappointed. One of my top 3 dining experiences of all times, this place is 5 stars. I mentioned it was our anniversary when I made the reservation a month ago and they remembered and treated us to a special welcoming and appetizer. The atmosphere is intimate and quiet (pants required, jacket recommended) and the wait staff is impeccable. They probably had 3 staff per table and you never ever heard the wait staff or the kitchen make a peep (and we sat next to the kitchen), they were so quiet and respectful. Our waitress helped us pick a perfect bottle of red wine and we were very impressed with her knowledge and ability to match our desired taste with our meal. My wife started with the oysters on the half-shell and said it was the best raw oysters she’s ever had! She then had the grilled bourbon shrimp and said it was exceptional but not as good as her roasted grouper with rock shrimp risotto from Hanks. I started with the lobster skillet cake and crabcake duo – it was decent but nothing to write home about, I’ve had as good crabcakes as finger food at a reception. Then I had the special, which was a wreck fish, a type of white fish from Florida. Now this is what I was waiting for. This fish was so well prepared I wish I could take a lesson from the chef. Crispy on the outside but still juicy on the inside, it was perfect! Well done P.Grill! We rounded the night off with deserts. My wife got a slice of heaven in the coconut cake and according to her, it’s worth all the accolades. Another diner got the chocolate decadence which came with a glass of milk and it was exactly as advertised, very rich! Finally our other diner got the soufflé and although its not on the menu it is available. It took 30 minutes to prepare but it was well worth it. He had had it before and was extremely satisfied he was able to get it again. In all, this was a once in a lifetime experience and we knew this going into it. Total cost for a couple - $260.

    Sight-seeing

We didn’t want this trip to be too hectic so we weren’t as active as others.

Friday morning we went to Fort Sumter. There is parking next to the port and the ticket office opens at 8:30 and you must purchase for that day’s tours. The first boat departs at 9:30. The rides to and from the Fort are very informative with a history of the Fort and the city. You spend one hour on the Fort and that is just about enough time to see everything. It was hot so being there in the morning was great. The boat is air conditioned on the bottom and we rode back in the AC!

We shopped on King Street Friday afternoon, tons of shops and the ladies really enjoyed this area!

Saturday morning we took a carriage ride using Classic Carriage. We took the early bird special and booked on line so it cost 15/person. The ride began at 9:30 and this was perfect as it was not crowded nor was it hot. Very nice way to see the city.

Saturday afternoon a storm came in so our beach day at Sullivan’s was cancelled. But we did manage to eat at Poe’s and then drive around Sullivan’s and IOP which is always fun to see the houses!

Sunday we rented a boat from the IOP Marina and took it out for 5 hours and toured the harbor and intercoastal waterways. We are big “boat people” so I am comfortable driving a boat and my wife is comfortable riding. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and there’s no better way to see the houses, harbor, bridges, USS Yorktown and Shem Creek than by water. If you know what you’re doing, I would highly recommend renting a boat!

    Bars

We are all in our late 20s and early 30s so we were definitely interested in the bar scene. Hands down our favorite bar was the Vendue Inn’s rooftop. Great atmosphere with lots of chairs and candles and the drinks were reasonable. We also enjoyed Mad River, it has tons of tv’s and was not crowded at all on Saturday night. I would avoid the Blind Tiger (too crowded, hot and smokey) and Henry’s (too smokey).

    Miscellaneous

Things we learned from our trip that I’d like to share to other TA viewers.

Parking in the historic district is pretty limited and all the streets have meters. Our hotel charged $20/day for in and out valet service. That was a little steep and we wanted access to things in our cars. So there are two lots at the end of Market Street at Concord Street that are used for parking by the port authority (I think). They charge $8/day for in %26amp; out and they gave us a permit for the entire weekend for $32. It was very convenient and not expensive!

Our Review Of Charleston - Anniversary Trip

Thanks for the great trip report! This is very helpful in planning our visit.

Our Review Of Charleston - Anniversary Trip

Thank you for taking the time to write this trip report! It was very informative. I%26#39;ve already saved it so that I can refer to it for my next trip to Charleston!

    Lily

Glad that you enjoyed your stay!

Glad you had such a nice visit. You gave a great trip report. Others looking to travel to our fair city should copy you itinerary. Well done and happy belated anniversary!

Fantastic post - thank you for taking the time to write it.

I love to read Trip Reviews because as y%26#39;all know, when you live here, you tend to miss a lot. I was planning on going to Coast for the first time in a few weeks, but now I may change my plans.

    Great read!

All restaurants and bars in Charleston are now smoke-free. Mt. Pleasant will have the same as of 9/1/07.

    Beach Colony or Monterey Bay?

okay, I%26#39;m torn b/t these two hotels. I stayed at Beach Colony last year and liked it...but I kind of want to go somewhere different. Is Monterey Bay nicer? I really loved the location of Beach Colony (out of the hustle and bustle) and all. But Monterey Bay seems nice. And it%26#39;s also in the Northern part of Ocean Blvd.

I also liked the free breakfast buffet that MB advertises. Though I have read it isn%26#39;t fabulous, it%26#39;s still decent. Does anyone know if they will still have that during less popular months such as September?

Anyway, I am just curious which hotel is nicer.

    Thanks in advance!

    Beach Colony or Monterey Bay?

personally I would stick with Beach colony

If you had only 2 days in Charleston...

If anyone would like to offer their opinion as to what you%26#39;d do and where you%26#39;d eat in Charleston if you only were there for two days, I would be most appreciative. Thanks!

If you had only 2 days in Charleston...

travel down king street and admire antiques, visit the battery and take a pedi-cab to poogan%26#39;s porch for either breakfast or lunch. they serve supper too, but we haven%26#39;t done that yet. enjoy your trip!

If you had only 2 days in Charleston...

I was in Charleston for 3 days last year and the highlights of my trip were Nathanial Russell House and Middleton Place Plantation.

Middleton Place: tour the plantation and enjoy a wonderful meal in the onsite restaurant. http://www.middletonplace.org/

For great ';lowcountry cuisine'; is Gullah Cuisine. It is off the beaten path outside of Mt. Pleasant right on Highway 17.

    http://www.gullahcuisine.com/

Try a ghost walk in downtown Charleston!! there great fun..

Depending on what time of year you are here. The Lowcountry Shrimp Festival, or Grits Festival are local must do!!

Take a boat tour of Fort Moultrie, they also have dinner cruises.

and RELAX, a day at any of the local beaches.

    Here%26#39;s what I would do:

    1. Take a carriage ride

    2. Walk through the market and get dessert at Kaminsky%26#39;s

    3. I%26#39;d walk along the Battery

    4. Stroll some streets and look at gardens

    5. I%26#39;d eat at Poogan%26#39;s Porch downtown

    6. I zip over to Patriot%26#39;s Point and tour the complex/ships

    7. I%26#39;d take the boar ride out to Fort Sumter

    8. I%26#39;d eat at Gilligan%26#39;s

    9. Lie on the beach at Isle of Palms.

    best wishes.

whew - pardon my hurried spelling! LOL . Please ride a BOAT, not a boar!

Read the ';What I Did Over Spring Break Trip Report';, first posted April 24, 2007.

The report is very detailed and will give you lots of wonderful ideas.

I%26#39;m not sure if you need anymore suggestions, but I put together a concise list of Charleston to-do%26#39;s when planning our trip there last year - http://piytravel.com/pages/s.piy?t=usscch

You may find it helpful. Two of our more obscure/enjoyable finds were Timbo%26#39;s boiled peanuts (along the road out to the plantations) and the tour of the Old City Jail offered by Bulldog Tours.

    Enjoy your trip!

Good clarification bud41...funny! First thing I would do would be to try and extend my stay. If that is not a possibility I would take either a carriage ride or a motorized tour. Carriage ride is more unique, but the motorized tours can cover more area and sometimes provide more information. I would eat at Tristan for either lunch or dinner, best burgers and she crab soup in town and the lamb ribs are incredible. Also consider eating at High Cotton, Magnolias, or Anson...Magnolias is open for lunch, the other 2 are dinner only. High Cotton has a very good Sunday brunch...as does Tristan actually.

    Eat, drink, and be merry.

We were in Charleston last month and had a terrific visit, check out my post for some pointers:

    Hey Bud41:

Based on your photo, appears you like riding exotic animals. Are you sure you didn%26#39;t attempt to ride a boar out to Ft. Sumpter?! ;-)

  • Seaside resort north myrtle beach

    Hi,

Has anyone ever stayed in the 1 bedroom oceanview at the seaside? How is the oceanview? It looks like there is a large building right next to it?

Also how about the 2 bedroom oceanview, does it have a better view? I%26#39;ve been staying at the Monteray Bay and wanted a change this year, going in October.

    Thanks

    Seaside resort north myrtle beach

Seaside is a great place with great views from upper floors. Book the one bedroom and they will upgrade you when you arrive to the two bedroom oceanfront . This happened to several people we talked with while staying there in June.

    Seaside resort north myrtle beach

Great - thanks for the information

How are the elevators at Seaside? Is it bad to ask for a high floor? Does it take forever to get up and down the elevators?

We stayed oceanfront on the 14th floor with no problems getting up and down to our room. Take the island approach and enjoy the moment.

I guess my real question is, did you prefer being on a higher floor or would you ask for a floor in the middle of the building next time?

We would stay on the 14th floor again if we return next year. Ocean breeze on corner unit from balcony and view is great.

i am at the hotel as i write this our electric went ouy yesterday we had to be moved to a diffrent floor refride and all after 6 hours of no air. our wives had to go to the hallway to do their hair the only compensation we received was 20% off i would not recomend this condo thanks

  • Restaurants between CHS and MYR

We will be down soon and want to stop by a good restaurant or two on our way between airports. Anyone know if some good places between Charleston and Myrtle Beach airports? We are trying to avoid going into Charleston, but right off the highway is fine. Thanks.

    Restaurants between CHS and MYR

If you are looking for good old fashion ';Lowcountry Cuisine'; Try the Gullah Cuisine Restaurant. It is located outside of Mt. Pleasant right on Hwy 17, which you will be taking to Myrtle Beach.

    http://www.gullahcuisine.com/

If you are looking for fresh seafood there is Shem Creek which is also in Mt. Pleasant. Easy access from the main highway.

    www.charlestoncocktail.com/shem_creek.html

After Mt. Pleasant, there is the town of Mcclellanville, it is small town you could blink and miss it. They have great restaurants but depending on what day of the week, you done run the risk of them being closed. mymcclellanville.net/2007/鈥?/a>

And that is about it until you get to the Myrtle Beach area. Mt Pleasant also has alot of the big name restaurants like Applebees, but if you want local, try Gullah or Shem Creek.

    Restaurants between CHS and MYR

South of Myrtle is Murrell%26#39;s Inlet--lots of good restaurants, but far the best is Drunken Jack%26#39;s! Long wait at dinner, but good fresh seafood, good atmosphere, and the absolute best hush puppies and honey butter I%26#39;ve ever had--they%26#39;re amazing! Very casual and reasonable, too. I live north of Cincinnati and have eaten there probably 13+ times in the last 13 years or so--I make it a must-do any time I%26#39;m in SC (even when in Columbia for business!).

Sewee Restaurant in Awendaw. It%26#39;s lovely! Just north of Mt. Pleasant on Hwy 17.

A rare date night in North Myrtle, where to go?

We%26#39;ve been coming to Myrtle Beach for years with my husband%26#39;s family. Tonight my in-laws are going to watch my daughter and her cousins and all of the young adults are going out. My husband and I decided to have a night on our own, a first down here for us!

Can anyone recommend a mid-priced restaurant that might be a little quieter, maybe on the water, not TOO far from North Myrtle Beach? I don%26#39;t mind if there are kids there, but we don%26#39;t want a restaurant at Barefoot Landing or one of the big chains like Carrabbas.

    Thanks!

A rare date night in North Myrtle, where to go?

Couple options-go across the bridge behind Barefoot Landing to Barefoot Resort to Docksiders Grille, its a nice restaurant overlooking the Marina and Intracoastal Waterway. Indoor/outdoor seating, sometimes live music.

Or go to Filets on the Intracoastal Waterway at the Little River Swingbridge on Seacoast Hwy/9. Indoor/outdoor seating, nice restaurant with tiki bar, live music but not big band, maybe 1 or 2 people playing/singing.

These places will not be as crowded as your normal MB restaurants.

    Hi,

Whats the average weather in June?

    Ta

    Weather in June

That%26#39;s off a chart listing whole year. Not something I just made up......

June is the best summer month in my opinion.

Many thanks for your quick replies.

    monterey bay suites-myrtle beach

my husband and i are staying at monterey bay suites......the hotel looks pretty nice and is on the beach. we requested oceanfront end suite. if anyone has stayed here and has any advice on what floor to ask for...or any info good or bad i would appreciate it.

    monterey bay suites-myrtle beach

Monteray Bay is a great little place...looks wonderful since the renovation. The rooms are laidout nicely...you do have to walk thru the bedroom when you enter the suite...but other than that the suites, IMO, are very accomodating. Balconies are a nice size...and its located on one of the nicer beach areas in the MB area. I always prefer the higher floors for a better view...but I would say most of the room there would have a good view.

    :)

    monterey bay suites-myrtle beach

I%26#39;ve been staying here for the last 4 years and like it very much. I%26#39;ve stayed in the oceanfront end unit, they are smaller than the other rooms. The bedroom is a little cut off when you enter the room. I believe they told me it was 500 sq ft as the regular oceanfront rooms are 508 sq ft. I stayed in a ';D'; unit last year (#1613) the balcony was smaller, but the room was much bigger, 590 sq ft. I really liked the lay out of the room. And the view while not oceanfront was great, was able to see the sunrises every morning.

    Hope this helps

We are considering Monterey Bay for September. We used to like Carolina Winds until June when we had no maid service 3 out of the 7 days we stayed there. We like this small quieter section of Myrtle Beach. I%26#39;ve heard that the parking garage is a little tight in Monterey Bay. What do you think?

I think tight parking garages are becoming the norm!

yea it%26#39;s a little tight but once you get use to it you%26#39;ll be fine. It%26#39;s nice parking the car on the same floor your staying on.

First Time visit. Restaurant Suggestions, Stuff for Toddlers

We are staying at the Harbour Lights Timeshares in early September. We have a 2-yr.-old and need some suggestions as far as restaurants, good beach locations, and stuff for 2-yr. olds.

As far as restaurants, we like going to local favorites that are reasonable and are kid friendly (2yr. old).

Can anyone suggest a beach location that is family friendly, possibly a quieter than others.

For toddlers, I noticed there is a childrens%26#39; museum - any thoughts.

Finally, any suggestions on things to do other than the beach.

Thanks in advance for any help

First Time visit. Restaurant Suggestions, Stuff for Toddlers

Broadway At The Beach.. a shopping, entertainment complex.. and it does have a playground.. with benches.. so you can watch your child...

Barefoot Resort.. is another shopping and dining complex...

    **Both are outdoors...

Ripley%26#39;s Aquarium.. is located at Broadway... its really nice.. my sons enjoyed it!

First Time visit. Restaurant Suggestions, Stuff for Toddlers

For restaurants, I recommend Little Pigs BBQ, King%26#39;s Famous Pizza, and Painters Homemade Ice Cream (dessert, of course). I would think that all three could work with kids in tow, though we went without any children.

As far as things to do, I put together a short list here that you might find helpful: http://piytravel.com/pages/s.piy?t=usscmb

    Enjoy your trip!

    collector%26#39;s cafe

    miyabi

for shopping.. go to tanger outlet

Not sure I would take young child to Collectors Cafe or Miyabi. Their attention span is all of 10 mins tops. You might enjoy Cheeseburger in Paradise, they have good hamburgers, good frozen drinks, live music, might be good lunch time place. We took our 2 yr old grandson last year. Wild Wings Cafe in Garden City not too far from your location, good wings, good ribs, child friendly, indoor/outdoor seating.

If you want simple and tasty, go for Burky%26#39;s. The menu includes burger/fries but also salads and baked potatoes and the ice cream is a big plus. Delicious and very kid friendly.

And if you go to Burky%26#39;s be sure to get the discount certificate from Restaurant.com

Thanks for all the great suggestions - You all are very helpfull

  • Smoking ban question

I read in another thread that all bars, restaurants in Charleston are now smoke free. I enjoy an occasional cigar. Here in Florida, you can smoke outside.

Can I still smoke a cigar on a bar/restaurants outdoor patio? How about on one of those rooftop bars downtown--any of those more cigar friendly than the others?

    Smoking ban question

I would think that you can still smoke at the rooftop bars, but I am not 100% sure. I haven%26#39;t been to a rooftop bar since the ban went into effect...

Mt. Pleasant will also be starting a similar smoking ban on September 1st....

    Smoking ban question

There is a cigar bar here in Charleston that was exempted from the ban. It is the Tinder Box on Meeting Street and opens at 5 P.M. The restaurants and bars have smoking outside. Some that have patios and outdoor areas are allowing it there but not all of them. It depends on the management.

is the Gay Dolphin still open?

I wanted to take the kids there this year to wander around, but had heard a rumor that they were closing up. And, if they have closed, is there anything else that even comes close to that place? I know there are Eagles and Wings and all that everywhere, but there is only one Gay Dolphin!

is the Gay Dolphin still open?

It was open and doing well during our visit on the first week of July. The only thing I know they closed off was the stairway that used to lead to the overlook that was on top of the building, but the other three floors are still chock full of goodies, you could spend all day in there just browsing.

is the Gay Dolphin still open?

Fantastic! I%26#39;ve tried to explain this place but I don%26#39;t think anyone truly understands what I mean. I can%26#39;t wait to take them there!

    Yes its still open!

    MAN....I haven%26#39;t been in there I years.

For some reason I remember having to pay like 25 cents to climb those stairs for the ';look out';. Does anyone else remember that?

Oh I love the Gay Dolphin! Used to go there every summer when

I was a kid. Took MY kids there many, many years later.....the same exact stuff was there! I mean....the SAME stuff....had dust on it too. LOL!

My kids didn%26#39;t really get the same thrill out of it that I did.....but it is a fun place. I hope that place never closes! Would NOT be Myrtle Beach without it. Pavillion is one thing....Gay Dolphin is another!

That might be where the mix-up was. They did use to have a ';look-out'; (a spiral staircase that wound its way to the roof plus of the place) that they had to close down because of safety concerns....other that that, The Gay Dolphin is plugging right along...and probably will be for a few more generations!

    :)

A friend had mentioned this place to me, and all I can say is ';different strokes for different folks.'; I walked in the door, and the place reeked like diesel fuel or some such, and I didn%26#39;t want my 9 year old granddaughter LOOKING at some of the merchandise they had on display. I did stay long enough to get something in a Gay Dolphin bag for my friend, to bring back good memories for her. :-)

Would someone like to try to explain why I should put this on our list of places to see? Or why we shouldn%26#39;t if we have a 10 and 13 year old? I live at the beach so we%26#39;ve seen the ';not for children%26#39;s eyes'; t-shirts and shot glasses but what makes the Gay Dolphin so interesting?

    and where is it located?

It%26#39;s just this big tourist shop that you could get lost in. From what I remember, there was a floor (or section anyway) that had sea shells, one that was jewelry, one that had super cheap plastic kid stuff, and a part with t-shirts. Apparently, some are a bit adult-oriented, but I don%26#39;t remember or just didn%26#39;t notice that part. I think all the stores, at every beach, have those. Basically, it feels like the store is bursting at the seams with lots and lots of tourist stuff. Nothing exceptionally fantastic. Would I make a special trip to go there? Probably not. But I remember it from when I was a kid, and I thought it would be fun to go see it again since I%26#39;m going to be in the area anyway.

on Ocean Blvd North just up from where the old Pavillion was, ocean side. To me Gay Dolphin has the same trinkets now as they did 30 yrs ago when I first started coming to MB. I am sure some of them were there then that are there now. It is not for everyone, it is not an upscale gift shop by any means.

    Trip Report - Grocery Shopping 7/28 - 8/4

    Trip Report 鈥?Grocery Store 7/28

Bi-Lo on 38 North. Wonderful store, lines were not long at all and the selection was incredible. Even had someone making sushi.

    Trip Report - Grocery Shopping 7/28 - 8/4

what time were you at BiLo- I lived across the street and it seemed to always be busy to me LUCKY YOU!

    Trip Report - Grocery Shopping 7/28 - 8/4

Actually it was early afternoon on Saturday - maybe 1:30.

Funny....I only live maybe 2 blocks to the food lion on 62nd...and in the summer months, I%26#39;ll make the trip to Bi-Lo just to beat the crowds at the Food Lion.......the store is quite a bit bigger, so many the crowds are there, just more spaced out! :)

    :)

its a great store, I wish I had it up here, although I normally shop at Lowes, love that store. I guess I went at 5:15 after work as a normal routine, so of course that was not the best time. But then I did not have to worry about going Saturday. Went down bypass today at lunch, lots of traffic still out there. Waterpark had pretty good crowd as you can imagine at almost 100 degrees at noon time.

There are several Food Lions in MB, but I prefer Kroger.

    I-95 north to NMB

You all did such a great job getting me back on the road when we leave, I thought it would be more important to make sure I%26#39;ve got the right route to get there!

Coming in from the north on 95 mid-day, mid-week - mapquest says to

Merge onto I-40 E via EXIT 81B toward WILMINGTON / CLINTON.

Take the US-17 exit- EXIT 416 A-B- toward TOPSAIL ISLAND / NEW BERN / MYRTLE BEACH.

    Merge onto I-140 W / US-17 S via EXIT 416A toward SHALLOTTE / MYRTLE BEACH.

Merge onto US-17 S toward MYRTLE BEACH / CAROLINA BEACH.

Merge onto US-17 S toward SHALLOTTE / MYRTLE BEACH (Crossing into SOUTH CAROLINA).

(wave to Hart1 in Little River)

Turn LEFT onto 15TH AVE S.

    Turn RIGHT onto OCEAN BLVD S / SC-65 / S OCEAN BLVD.

Is this route better than coming further down 95 to 501 to 22?

Thanks, You all are the best when it comes to making plans.

    I-95 north to NMB

You are going to Ocean Blvd South-correct? The Hwy 17 into Little River is okay, not horrible way to come, Iit is 4 lane hwy, but once in Little River, take Hwy 9/31 exit go about 2 miles to Hwy 31 (begins here) take 31 for about 15 miles to Grissom Parkway exit, stay on Grissom Parkway you will be at 48th Ave North follow Grissom 10th Ave N turn left go about mile to Ocean Blvd turn right.

If you stay on Hwy 17 all the way thru NMB to MB, it will take you a very long time to get to OBS, We always take Hwy 31 into MB.

You could take Hwy 31 to Hwy 501 or Hwy 544 but it will dump you on West side of Intracoastal and lots of traffic.

    I-95 north to NMB

Thanks Hart - knew I could count on you for the quickest route!

Hart - just checked the map...we%26#39;re staying near crescent beach in NMB-- doesn%26#39;t look like we%26#39;re on 17 very long after we get thru your town.

as I look at my map closer...

why is south ocean blvd in north myrtle beach and north ocean blvd in Myrtle beach???

Sorry -there are 2 Ocean Blvd Souths and Norths, Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach. I know you posted in NMB and I should have noticed that.

When you go thru Little River, you will follow the signs south on Hwy 17, when you cross over the Intracoastal Waterway the first exit ramp you come to is Cherry Grove, if you want you can take that exit you will turn left at stop light and that will take you straight to Ocean Blvd, you can then travel down Ocean Blvd to Crescent Beach. Its not any faster but on a Saturday not any slower then driving down Hwy 17.

I am not sure what the ';founding fathers'; were smoking when they decided to have the exact same road naming system for MB and for NMB. You have Ocean Blvds south and north, and you have the numbered streets south and north in both locations. It can be very confusing to people. AND to add more confusion there is an area in NMB where Ocean Blvd changes to Ocean Drive and then back again to Ocean Blvd.

Sorry Hart1.5 pointed out that I should have said turn RIGHT off the Cherry Grove exit ramp

    Thanks for the tag-teaming Hart 1 %26amp; 1.5

Someone has to keep me straight, I have been in a fog today, couldn%26#39;t even answer my phone correctly at work! TOO much night life and not enough rest! :o) Traffic did seem a tad better this past weekend compared to others, July is the worst, so you should not have as many issues as the July travelers.

    Hart wrote ';It can be very confusing to people. AND to add more confusion there is an area in NMB where Ocean Blvd changes to Ocean Drive and then back again to Ocean Blvd.';

    I%26#39;m confused.......

Hart......Please tell us where Ocean Blvd changes to Ocean Drive and back again...........

NO it doesn%26#39;t change POP, THAT WAS MY MISTAKE, I have been in NMB over a year so I am still learning, I never vacationed up here, we were South people, so yes I do make mistakes, but I do know the drivng directions. I am myself confused why they call that area Ocean Drive and you have OD Resort and OD Arcade, etc, yet it is Ocean Blvd. I am happy to admit when I make a mistake and I am still learning North MB, prior to moving here, I had no use for this area at all. But that was my mistake again, I actually like living here very well. I still think that the south beaches like Surfside/Garden City are more to my liking, AND I know you think NMB is the bomb, cool!

    Fireworks in Hilton Head

I keep reading about fireworks in HIlton Head. What night do they do this? What places can you dine to see the fireworks? What time do they start?

    Thanks!

    Fireworks in Hilton Head

There are fireworks in Shelter Cove on Tuesday nights. When we were there in June, they started between 9:30-10:00 p.m. It was a nice show.

    Fireworks in Hilton Head

Call and make a revservation at Scott';s Fish Market for the fireworks. They have great food and an outside bar great for viewing the fireworks.

I would recommend the Ocean Grille instead of Scott%26#39;s because of valet parking and better food and view.

    Thanks Guys, this helps!

What would be a good place to eat with teens in Shelter Cove. Something fun would be good. Thanks.

  • Happy Hours/Bars

I%26#39;m visiting Hilton Head beginning next week and will be staying at Marriott%26#39;s Sunset Pointe at Shelter Cove. Can you please recommend some happy hour places or bars that cater to people around my age group (I%26#39;m a 28 yr old male and will be travelling with 4 of my friends).

    Thanks.

    Happy Hours/Bars

I always see tons of people at Aunt Chilada%26#39;s- don%26#39;t know if it%26#39;s any good? Tiki hut is also famous- on the beach at the Holiday Inn in South Forest Beach.

    Happy Hours/Bars

Satly Dog in Sea Pines is a good place to enjoy a few drinks.

Frankie Bones at Main Street Village is popular with the younger locals.

Also Hincheys at Coligny, Reilleys South at the entrance to Seapines and Prescotts Remy Room.

    Stan (Hhiguy)

Thanks for all the information. Where is Prescotts Remy Room? Are there any places within walking distance to Shelter Cove that have a good night scene?

Aunt Chiladas is good for happy hour but the ones that I have found to be best are: Wild Wing Cafe and Hincheys (both in Coligny) and Caseys Sports Bar (New Orleans Road). The prices are around $1.75 for a domestic pint and $2.75 for well drinks. These places are full around 4 -7. Big Bamboo in Coligny also has happy hour but only 2 for 1 for housebrew and margaritas. There is also Murphys Irish Bar in Coligny but I am not too sure on their prices. If you like watching sport then I%26#39;d recommend these bars (apart from Bamboo as it doesn%26#39;t show sport).

Prescotts is located on 278, just before you enter SeaPines Circle.

    As for shelter cove

Kingfisher has entertainment in the evening, but i wouldn%26#39;t have dinner there. San Miguels has an outdoor bar.

  • Beach House Rental

WE are planning a family vacation 6 adults and 6 children age 12 - 17 for the summer of 2008 - probably July because that fits our children sporting scedules.

We want to rent a beach house on the beach. Does anyone have any ideas? I have search the web and there are so many. Does anyone have a recommendation of where would be good. We are very familar with the Myrtle Beach area - we do not want to go to far north or to the surfside beach area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreaciated.

    Beach House Rental

Then you for sure need to do it now, the busiest month in the entire year is July. That being said, you want to stay in Myrtle Beach -really good luck. MB beaches are very limited for beach HOUSES, you will have to go to Ocean Blvd North to find any selection. Not sure why you wouldn%26#39;t rather have more beach area, fewer high rises, meaning not as many people on beaches or traffic then right in MB, if you want north or south. Would Windy Hill section in NMB work for you? Try Elliott, Century 21 Thomas for beach rentals and good luck!

    95 S to 40 to 17 OR 95 to 38 to 501

We are coming from D.C. - Mapquest has us taking the former - some have suggested the latter. I heard 501 can be a bear. We are staying at the Harbour Lights at 501 and the Int. Coastal Waterway. We plant to leave D.C. at 5AM Sat 9/1, possibly Sun 9/2 and leaving MB Fri. 9/9 or 9/10. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    95 S to 40 to 17 OR 95 to 38 to 501

    correction - Mapquest has the 501, 38, 501 route

    95 S to 40 to 17 OR 95 to 38 to 501

My 2 cents-Labor Day weekend will certainly have traffic but in reality because you are on this side (Conway) of waterway, go ahead and take 501-because either way will have traffic. You will have 2 choices for grocery shopping you will pass thru the Carolina Forest Intersection and its not hard to miss a couple miles before your turn to Harbour Lights-you have a Kroger and Piggly Wiggly both very nice - or you can cross over the ICW and Bypass 17 and the next light turn right and you are at WalMart (just few miles) from where you are staying.

    Browns Bengals Nascar Dilemma (9/16/07)

    Third time I%26#39;ve tried this.

Playing golf that Sunday and hope to finish by the 1PM Kick off. Playing the Dunes I think in NMB.

Looking for a (Prefer Brown%26#39;s) great sport bar that can handle all the above, ideally close to the course.

Thanks to all who can help!

I am trying to help.. the above link.. has a list of sports bars...

    Good luck... :))

    Browns Bengals Nascar Dilemma (9/16/07)

Overtime Sports Bar- 1409 Hwy 17 S in NMB. Closer to you. Although, I promise most bars around here have multiple tvs-oh and Buffalo Wild Wings at Gator Hole Plaza, Cherry Grove area, has tons of tv%26#39;s and will show all kinds of games. Do not worry, you won%26#39;t miss either. And I would assume all Hooters and there is one at Hwy 22 and Hwy 17 in NMB at Colonial Mall.

Best place to check out the NASCAR race is the NASCAR Cafe - or NASCAR Sports Grille, its called now. Great viewing on their big screens. Not real close to the course, but thought I%26#39;d suggest it anyway. But its just The Glen - might not be a bad one to miss to be in MB! :o) (not a road course fan, myself)

    MROD65,

I%26#39;ll bet you can find a great Steelers Bar there. Sorry I just couldn%26#39;t resist.

    Greenville Next Weekend??

The Hubby %26amp; I are planning on a quick trip to escape. We need a budget priced BUT clean hotel. Also heard there are several antique stores in the area, how are those? Restaurants??Are the all non smoking? We sometimes like a smoke if we are having a drink.

    Thanks!

    Greenville Next Weekend??

    Hello!

What is your price range? My budget price might be different than your budget price.

I suggest staying downtown. The Hampton Inn (new), Westin Poinsett Hotel, Hyatt, and the Holiday Inn Express are all located downtown. The first 3 are not what I would call budget but they might be running a special. Pettigru Place is a BB http://www.pettigruplace.com/

Haywood road is another location for those from out of town and so would Woodruff because it is close to shopping and food and major highways. Lots of traffic so be prepared.

On Saturday Mornings there is a small farmers market downtown but fun none the less. Tons of shopping and dining options including a Mast General Store.

There are a few other hotels/motels.

    Antique Stores:

Yes there are tons of antique stores in Greenville and the surrounding area. Several are located close to downtown. You might not find a bargain... a lot of the places are quiet expensive.

I haven%26#39;t been antiquing in a long time. A lot of places have closed or changed names. If you do a web search for antiques you should get some places.

    Here is a list:

Palmetto Home and Garden- Laurens Road (864) 234-4960

This is in a new location. Use to have a mix of antiques and other vendors. They have had to move locations due to Greenville Mall being demolished.

DANNY%26#39;S ANTIQUE MALL- changed locations several times but I think it still exists somewhere in Greenville.

BUNCOMBE ANTIQUES MALL Taylors, SC (864) 268-4498 Use to be huge.

Antiques on Augusta- New- Augusta Street in Lewis Plaza

Southern Estates Antiques (Mauldin Road exit off of 1-85) 8642998981

    Postcards from Paris /www.postcardfromparis.com/

    Restaurants/Smoking

Downtown Greenville wants to go smoke free but that is still up in the air. A lot of places chose to be smoke free but there are still bars that allow smoking.

What kind of food do you like? Are you more of a chain place or local? I could recommend a few places. Just give me an idea what you are looking for and price range and also meal time.

  • Edisto Beach - August camping or rental a small cottage

Trip date: August 12 - 19, 2007 - I have been on the Edisto Beach campground website and camping spots are not available on the beach side (reserved), some availabe inland, Is it to hot and buggy to camp inland? I don%26#39;t want to stay in a condo. I would prefer a detached cottage, something comfortable and local for 5-7 days. I have searced online for rentals, but have not found what I%26#39;m looking for. This trip is starting on August 12 and I am looking for an off peak rate. There will be two people in this party. Very mature.

Also, to everyone who reponsed to my earier message for Charleston off the road recommendations between Charleston and Edisto Beach, I thank you and will definitely try some of the local seafood houses.

    Send me suggestions........Midnightingeorgia.

Edisto Beach - August camping or rental a small cottage

I would not recommend tent camping inland. It will be very hot, humid, and buggy (mosquitoes can be fierce down there). Even the camping spots at the beach part of the park can be hot as the actual camping spots are behind the dunes and do not get the full effect of the sea breeze. The majority of folks who camp at Edisto in the summer use trailers or RVs.

The week you are going is generally considered to be the last week of the ';high'; season. You are going to have problems finding an off peak rate for next week. There aren%26#39;t too many small detached cottages at Edisto (most noncondo rentals are 4-5 bedroom houses) but a few of the homes do have separate lower level apartments that are good for only two folks. There is also a section of Wyndam Ocean Ridge that has one room efficiency lodges (most at around 350 sq feet) that might meet your needs. I recommend calling the real estate agencies (Edisto Realty, Atwood, and Lyons are the big three for rentals there) and talking personally to them. They can best tell you what they have available meeting your requirements. Who knows, maybe you can negotiate a lower rate over the phone.

Edisto Beach - August camping or rental a small cottage

As you no doubt know, the SC and GA coastal area is experiencing dangerous heat and humidity. In these conditions, you should not expect comfortable camping even at night. Also, there will be mosquitoes. Rent a place with AC for this trip; come back for camping in October!

I agree with Kiawahvilla. It would be very hot, humid, and buggy...not rightly sure if buggy is a word in that sense...but it ought be if it isn%26#39;t.

    Horse Drawn Carriage Tours

We are having record heat this week. Anytime the temperature gets over a certain temperature, the carriage horses are not allowed to go out. Please keep this in mind when planning your trips this week. The bus tours are still running and they are air conditioned.

Up until the last couple of weeks we have enjoyed a relatively cool summer so maybe it will not last too long. It looks like most of the rest of the country is experiencing the same heat.

Plan indoor activities, walk on the shady side of the street, dress light, cool %26amp; loose. Drink plenty of water and do outdoor activities early in the day. Wear sunscreen!

Good tip SCBlossom...CNN was down filming at Waterfront Park today talking about the heat.

  • Dinner for four

    Greetings,

my brother and i are going to myrtle beach with our wives next week and staying at kingston plantation. we have rented a condo there with a kitchen, but will be doing some dinners out on the town. we are in our 30%26#39;s and looking for something nice, but not too expensive. i would love some recommendations.

    thanks in advnace,

    matthew

    Dinner for four

You are staying in good location -NMB and close to MB. At Barefoot Landing you will find River City Cafe, its nothing fancy but nice atmosphere sit out on deck overlooking waterway. Drive a little further north to Cherry Grove-Dynamties at Dock Holiday-on Intracoastal Waterway-live music, inside/outside dining-behind Hooters in Cherry Grove. Or take the Cherry Grove exit turn left to Filets, nice restaurant again on Waterway with Tiki Bar, inside/outside dining, live entertainment-all decent prices, great view of waterway, marinas and beautiful boats. Keep going up Hwy 17 to Calabash, NC for great seafood. Should take you about 30 - 40 mins from Kingston. 1800 restaurants along the Grand Strand-plenty to choose from, most are good, you can usually tell by how crowded the parking lots are. WE do not do seafood buffets but there are plenty to chose from.

    Dinner for four

Not sure from your post. Are you just there for the week-end or arriving next week-end for a weeks stay?

IF just for week-end I%26#39;d keep driving to a minimum and find someplace close. Somewhere at Broadway At The Beach or Barefoot Landing would be good. Hit some shopping, a meal and maybe a show in one stop vs driving around.

If you have an entire week to play with you can hit a different area each night. Calabash one night. Murrell%26#39;s Inlet the next. Here%26#39;s a pretty good site for searching and comparing reviews.

    http://www.myrtlebeachscrestaurants.com/

Our personal favorite is Duffy Street Seafood Shack in Cherry Grove. On the right driving in on Sea Mountain Highway. Pretty sure it%26#39;s at second stoplight. Very laid back atmosphere. Good food at reasonable price. Mostly outdoor (covered) seating. The upstairs is a bit better. Little cooler and not as noisy.

From Kingston you have two choices of routes. Straight up Rt 17 to Sea Mountain. Lots of stoplights and traffic.

Or you jump out Rt 22 to Rt 31 north. Quick 65 mph hop up to Rt 9 and take it into Cherry Grove.

this is great stuff. i thank you all so much.

    1st week of october weather

will it be warn enough to lay on beach, possibly

    swim in ocean?

    THX

    1st week of october weather

I have laid out up into Nov....which I got my worst sunburn ever and I have gotten into the ocean until mid October. If temps keep up like they are it will probably even be warmer than usual.

    1st week of october weather

    September Air,84.....Water, 80.......Precip. 5.57';

    October Air,76 .....Water,73........Precip. 2.73';

We%26#39;re heading down the same week. Way I see it the first week of Oct should be more in the line of Sept. weather. At least that%26#39;s what I%26#39;m hoping.......

THANKS guys - we%26#39;re coming from New Jersey -

if it won%26#39;t be warm by then we%26#39;ll be driving to Florida-

rather do MB - never been and it%26#39;s 7 hours closer than

    Florida............

Beautiful time to come and laying out should not be problem. This is just fyi, Fall bike week runs Oct 3-7, nothing like Spring bike week, but you will encounter more motorcycle traffic and some restaurants will have longer lines than other fall weeks.

What to do on a kidless night in Myrtle Beach?

While we%26#39;re at the beach with our friends each couple is going to get a night to go out WITHOUT the kids.

My wife and I were wondering what to do. We love shows but have seen the Carolina Opry just a few weeks ago. We saw the preview of Good VIbrations and it doesn%26#39;t float our boat. We%26#39;ve seen Cirque Du Soleil, and Legends. NO interest in seeing the show at Alabama Theater and my wife said if we did Dixie Stampeed or Midevil Times she%26#39;d want to take our son.

I know hart1 talks about Crocodile Rocks all the time but someone mentioned it%26#39;s very expensive even after you get in. We love music and it%26#39;s enticing but I don%26#39;t have money to throw away. What is it actually like? What happens when you%26#39;re there?

We like to have a few drinks but prefer to save money and drink at the beach house where we can make our own much cheaper. So do you have any suggestions?

The other couples that are going are having no problems choosing since they have never been to Myrtle Beach.

Help! We%26#39;d be doing this on Thursday August 23rd.

    Thanks

    Ron

What to do on a kidless night in Myrtle Beach?

    Bump

What to do on a kidless night in Myrtle Beach?

Ron ~ I really like Crocodile Rocks.

However ~ I would not reccomend this place if you don%26#39;t care for ~

adult humor ~ nasty language ~ woman dancing around drunk. LOL!

We always have a blast ~ but it is not for the faint of heart. The guys up there playing the piano are a HOOT. Depending on the crowd ~ you may see things you wouldn%26#39;t expect.

You sit ~ if you get there early enough to get a table ~ and listen and watch the 2 guys carry on duets / songs ~ etc. It is a real comedy thing too. Goodness ~ don%26#39;t them know it is your birthday or anything.

If you want a song played ~ you write it on a napkin / paper and send some cash along with it. The bigger the cash ~ the more likely they will play your song. The will play anything ~ from Johnny Cash ~ Bob Segar ~ Snoop Dog ~ Elton John ~ country.. etc.

Again ~ if you want to sit ~ go early. By the time 11:00 rolls around ~ it is normally standing room only ~ and they have reached their fire limit. Then they let folks in as some go out.

    Hope you check it out~

Might sound crazy but might consider doing same stuff you do with the kids. You%26#39;ll find it%26#39;s a whole different ball game as a couple.

A stroll through Barefoot Landing and actually being able to spend time in the stores you want to see. Not having to worry about what the kids are doing. Where they%26#39;re at. Hope they don%26#39;t break anything.

Might even do a round of putt-putt. Again. Easier as a couple. Not keeping score for four or five. Making sure kids aren%26#39;t bothering other groups while you%26#39;re trying to putt. Breaking up arguements over who%26#39;s turn it is or who moved their ball too far. Retreiving balls from water hazards.

Stop on the way back to condo for cold beer or margarita.

Catch the 8pm show at Comedy Cabana, enjoy a night-cap at Bummz and a moonlit stroll on the beach...

Croc Rocks is alot of fun, and it can be VERY busy! So, if you do want a good seat, you will have to get there fairly early...or be ready to stand and wait (along with about 500 other people) for a seat to open up. The guys there that play the pianos are fantastic...and pretty funny. Drinks there are a bit steep....but most drinks are at Broadway at the Beach.

I would even think about Murrells Inlet....lots of great music options there, and with the marshwalk, and all the fantastic restaurants. You could dine at one...walk around and listen to the different music, scope out another for dessert or a nightcap....

    :)

Crocodile Rocks is not for everyone, what ';floats our boat'; may not float yours. We are not romantic dinner people at all, we would never go to Collectors Cafe or the Library, not our thing. We rarely if ever give $ for requests, there are plenty of people who are willilng to pay for a song. We also don%26#39;t pay the cover to get in, so for us its very cheap entertainment. We know going in that most likely we will hear the same songs we hear every week, but thats part of the deal. We go strictly for the people watching and the comedy of the piano players. They are very talented as well. Its our hang out and we know most of the people that work there, that is what makes it enjoyable for us. Its crowded, it can be loud. We are always there early and sit on stools, we never sit at a table, don%26#39;t like the view from the tables. We are also only beer drinkers and my husband is always the designated driver so our bar tab is not expensive, we normally have a great night watching everyone else be drunk and have a good time. So that is what makes it fun to us. A quiet evening, sipping champage is NOT going to do it for us.

You don%26#39;t mention the amount of time allotted for your night out. Georgetown has couple different tour companies that offer cruises -- (www.rovertours.com) offers a 3 hour 5pm departure to barrier island and Georgetown Lighthouse. Adults $28

or Lowcountry Plantation Tours 843-477-0287 offers Evening Harbor Tours 7pm $20 adults.

    For Hart1

We love Croc Rocks too but have not been in the summer. When you say early, what would you suggest. We have offered this as an evening option for our guests that are coming in for our son%26#39;s wedding. We warned them in advance about the humor. We are planning on going at 8pm. Is that too late? I feel the same way you do about the place. I could care less about the drinking and I don%26#39;t care what songs they play. They%26#39;re fantastic entertainers and that%26#39;s what we go for. Thanks for any suggestions!

Friday nights are less crowded then Saturday nights for Croc. You did not tell me when, obviously after Labor Day crowds thin out some. July at Croc Rocks has been incredibly crowded. We get there when the doors open at 7pm, so we can get our preferred stools. The entertainment starts at 8. The tables will most likely be gone by then but plenty of stools and side tables and once bottom is full the open upstairs and lots of stools around the edge. I have seen the downstairs fill up before 8 and I have seen it not full at 9, just depends. If its a summer Saturday then I suggest 7pm, you will have several parties reserving tables, usually bachlorettes, so that now limits the open tables for people arriving. We talk for the hour prior to the show, either to employees or visitors we meet sitting next to us. Always meet nice people there.
