Just wanted to refresh memories about traffic on I-95, particularly the stretch between the 495 beltway %26amp; Fredericksburg VA.
We had to go through there yesterday about 2pm and as horrible as it was northbound, it appeared to be even worse southbound.
Folks, you want to avoid this area if at all possible. Get through here early (preferably before 7 am), late (after 8 pm) or take an alternate route (such as 301). Otherwise, it can add HOURS to your trip.
I-95 Horrors around DC
Yes on our way back from Myrtle Beach last Saturday we hit the Fredericksburg area before 3:00 and I was so glad we made a reservation there. There seemed to be alot of traffic for about 30 minutes before we hit Fredericksburg and only seemed to be getting worse. Luckily we didnt get to see how worse it could have gotten because we stopped. On Sunday morning when we left to head back to New Jersey of course no traffic when getting to the DC area I guess because it wasnt rush hour work traffic like there would be on a weekday.
I-95 Horrors around DC
what is it about that area??? we hit it last saturday morning, got a late start, sat there for two hours!! it is ridiculous!! we came home friday night, we left myrtle beach at 3pm, and didn%26#39;t hit any traffic the entire way home. it took us 11 hours to get there, and about 8 to get home.
Yep, Fredericksburg is the problem area. All the way over to the Wilson Bridge.
I think the problem is the smaller roads all meet up in that area. Everyone is getting off of the smaller roads onto 95 and that causes delays.
M-F after 9 am is good and before 2 pm is best for going through that area. Sat-Sun early early early. However we left at 5am one sat. morning and it was still traffic because of an accident.
No offense to VA, DC, or MD. but that area has some of the worse drivers in the Mid-Atlantic Area. Basic stuff like ';Slower Drivers keep Right'; seems to be ignored. If the Speed LImit is 65 why are you in the far left lane driving 50 mph. Not only do you cause havoc for people driving behind you but then you pull over in the next lane w/out signaling and then that begins the braking pattern.
Then you have people driving on major highways driving 20 mph. So someone comes pulling up behind you and have to either quickly adjust speed or switch lanes causing more delays.
One other major issue is 18 wheelers. If you haven%26#39;t noticed a lot of big trucks are in that area. They switch lanes and cut off people all of the time and they were the cause of the accident at 5am on a Saturday morning. People don%26#39;t know what side to pass them on. You never drive side-by-side next to an 18 wheeler, would you pass the dagon truck already.
And another issue is you ignorant speeders. Why are you driving 100 mph on 95 in Fredericksburg when everyone knows that ';Smokie'; is sitting over there in the ';emergency vehicle'; only section waiting for you. I usually don%26#39;t do any more than 10 over the limit and these jerks fly past me like I am driving 10 under. Then they squeeze themselves in between 2 cars on an open highway for what reason, then I end up passing you anyway and now you get right back behind me doing the same thing and then you just look stupid.
As you can see I have a problem with these people. :-)
The area around Quantico Marine Base was a horror story for us coming back this Saturday. Is there any route west of 95 that can get you past the Beltway area without going too far out of the way? I am not a fan of the 301 Eastern route up thru Maryland.
Any way you go west will be somewhat out of the way.
The only way I can think of is if you go 17 at Fredericksburg and then hit 28 east/north going toward Manassas and then get on 66 to 495 then back on 95. That is so much out of the way I believe.
Otherwise, you might just want to change the time of day you%26#39;re coming through that area. M-F you should be there before 5am or after 7pm. Sat. before 8 am or after 10pm. Sun. before 10am or after 10pm.
Anyone else have any suggestions.
