Can anyone tell me where in South Carolina is a good place to visit for shrimping, clamming, crabbing? We are looking for some place where we can just go as a family to the water and have fun catching things on our own and not deal with the hassle of renting a boat or anything.
Shrimp, Crab, anything-where is the best place to catch?Without going out in a boat ...
On Kiawah you can fish from docks and bridges on the fresh water ponds and lakes.
You can catch crabs in the tidal marsh and creek areas; people drop their baited traps from the bridges. In a day of crabbing, you can probably catch enough to take home and clean for dinner. (We have done this. The crabs were delicious, but the process was long.)
I have also seen people casting nets for shrimp, but I do not know how successful they are.
I suspect that this kind of activity is possible on most of the barrier islands ... at least on those where development has been limited.
Shrimp, Crab, anything-where is the best place to catch?it just depends on what else you want to do, like shopping or sights. Do you wan to be closer to Charleston, Myrtle Beach or Savannah? If you really want to just enjoy outdoors then look at the SC parks site. Personally, since they have renourished the beach at Hunting Island State Park its just great. They have a campground right on the beach and several cabins. They also have a pier where you can fish or crab and they have an inland lake but I don%26#39;t know if it is salt or fresh. Shrimping and clamming would be tougher. I only know of one place where clams are accessable by foot(someone else may know more) in Beaufort. Shrimp season starts the 15th and you need a permit. I think out of state folks have to pay a lot for a permit, but maybe there is a two or three day permit?? And while you can just cast a net in the water and catch some shrimp you really need to bait them, so you need the meal and clay. Edisto and Myrtle also have campgrounds or cabins or both that are accessable to the beach. And, if you are coming in the winter months know that closer to December the shrimp and crabs get harder to find. They usually taper off by 1st of November.
