Going to Church

I%26#39;m going to be in Cton in October, staying over a weekend. As a Presbyterian I am aware of the beautiful church there, as well as the Congregationalist (I think) round church. I%26#39;ve walked past both but never been in.

Is it possible to attend services at either of these churches?

Going to Church

Yes! Charleston%26#39;s churches welcome visitors. Also, both churches you mention have websites.

Worship services at First (Scots) Presbyterian are held at 8:45 am and 11:15 am.

Worship service at Circular Congregation is held at 11 am. There is also a more ';quiet and meditative'; service at 8:45 am.

If you want, you can visit both on the same Sunday!

Going to Church

All of the downtown churches frequently have tourists as visitors. Everyone is most welcome! Remember that Charleston is known as the Holy City because of its many churches. Some churches are on some of the small side streets and around Marion Square as well as on the more well toured areas. We have lots of denominations to choose from and Charleston has long been known for its religious freedom. Some of the churches have more than one service, too.

The Scots greeters in front of the kirk in their kilts- neat.

The greeters are not always in kilts. Most Sundays they are in suits and in the summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day) they are usually in seersucker suits.

Thank you so much for this info! While I%26#39;d love to see the Scots greeters in their kilts, it has been in the 80%26#39;s when I%26#39;ve been to the area in October and I doubt they%26#39;d be too comfortable!

Are the churches sometimes open to the public during the week in case I miss church?

Generally the interiors are not open for view except for a service or by other special arrangement. You can visit the graveyards, view the exterior, etc.

The Presbyterian Church on Johns Island offers tours, given by volunteer church members, on one morning per week. So many people tried to visit the lovley old building, that the membership decided to respond! Perhaps some of the churches in Charleston do the same.

I suggest that you contact the church offices to inquire .. or just stop by when you are here.

That%26#39;s sound advice, Kiawah - thanks!
