I%26#39;m about to move out of Charleston, SC and just spend the past few days in the Pawleys Isle area and spent some time at the %26#39;hammock shops%26#39; and thought i%26#39;d post a review for future travelers to the area.
There%26#39;s about 20 or so stores within the Hammock Shops and they all say they close at 6pm but by 5:30 most of them had closed up for the day with the exception of the Christmas Mouse which stays open until 9pm.
Be sure you eat before you visit as the only dining choices you have during the day are either a picnic stand in the center of the shops or a posh little bar eatery which I felt had very awful food for the expensive price tag. I believe its the Louie something or other... I ordered a chicken sandwich and it was just awful the bun was doused in honey and had a touch of honey mustard (which wasn%26#39;t specific on the menu) and it was just sickeningly sweet. We also had the crab cake appetizer which had to be the worst crab cakes I%26#39;ve ever had. The crab meat tasted like it was canned and there was far too much mayonaise. The worst part of the restaurant was the service ... for the price I expected more than I got. All in all I would avoid that place and head to the take out stand next time for a simple turkey sandwich.
During the evening hours the area is gorgeous and covered in white christmas lighting and the remaining restaurants are open and its most charming.
As for the stores in the village the majority of them had over priced tourist goods and over priced local items that were of sub par quality and the owners or operators of the shops inside the village were less than friendly. The only exception being the Sea Shell Shop which had friendly service, great prices, and wonderful merchendise.
Hammock Shops at Pawleys IsleI go to the Hammock shops every year when I am in MB. I usually end up doing a lot of Christmas shopping there because I find the prices reasonable and the gifts a little different from home. The shop keepers have always been polite and very accomodating to my needs from the time my blood sugar took a dip %26amp; I needed candy right away to extra care in packing my purchases to travel safely. I find the variey of stores a lot of fun to go poke around in. Last year we had the best lunch there and found the staff to be so nice and patient while we picked thru the menu. we found the food to be great %26amp; recommend it. One of my traditions is to buy a local cookbook from whereever I travel %26amp; I always find a great selection there.
Last year,I even met Sandra Lee shopping there.(BTW...what a really NICE person and BEAUTIFUL %26amp; SKINNY!)...so, it%26#39;s all a matter of timing %26amp; how you treat others.
Hammock Shops at Pawleys IsleI went to these shops last spring - I can%26#39;t remember the first shop closest to the road but the clothes were inexpensive and the selection quite good. The help was pleasant , helpful and did not pester you . They had a nice set of rocking chairs on their porch as well as a small TV for the non shoppers .
Several other shops had clothes, nice handcrafted jewelry
Didn%26#39;t stop for lunch -saved that for a stop at Merrills inlet
